Music Review: A Great Release!

A few months before this CD came out, I auditioned a disk by Earth, Wind, and Fire vocalist Phillip Bailey that showed what can go wrong when a rock vocalist tries to sing jazz. When this disk from jazz singer Kevin Mahogany showed up, I was quite wary, because here was jazz singer covering rock songs--Motown classics such as "Signed, Sealed, and Delivered," "Pride & Joy," "I Can't Get Next to You," "The Tears of a Clown," and so forth.
Was I in for a pleasant surprise! Pride & Joy works magnificently, breathing new energy and life to these classic tunes. Mahogany sounds as though he genuinely enjoys this music, the studio musicians really cook, the production values are first-rate, and the end result is a CD that you can enjoy in your car, your boombox, or even use to show off your home audiophile system. Whether accompanied by a hot band featuring trumpeter Jon Faddis (the title track) or just a guitar ("Tears of a Clown"), Mahogany's voice and musicianship shine through in the service of these great tunes. This is a great CD that will doubtless be played over and over in audio showrooms throughout the country.
Description of Pride & Joy
Vocalist Kevin Mahogany inherited the rich jazz and blues tradition of his Kansas City hometown, along with the great R&B of Detroit's Motown hit factory. Many of the sidemen on those legendary sessions were bona fide boppers, so it's not much of stretch to swing-out these timeless tunes. On this CD, Mahogany reconnects Motown with its jazz legacy, using his vibrant, deep-toned baritone and a rhythm section that includes the elegant pianist James Weidman, bassist Melissa Slocum, percussionist Don Alias, and guitarist Dave Stryker. Mahogany and crew extend and elaborate on these R&B chestnuts written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, Marvin Gaye, and Barrett Strong. Tunes such as Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" highlight Mahogany leading a scat-happy Take 6-type combo. "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" (made famous by the Marvelettes) and the title track both swing with a Count Basie stroll. The Supremes' "My World Is Empty Without You" is slowed down to a spare and sexy Cuban clave beat.
