Music Review: ENJOYABLE BUT A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING

I a big fan of Kenny's country stuff and a bigger fan of Christmas time (and music). However there are two things that have a hard time "gelling" together: Christmas music and Kenny Chesney. When I saw that he was releasing a Christmas cd I was excited. Just the title alone forced me to want to buy it. But unfortunately I was slightly let down. I am not saying he is not a bad singer, it's just he should have considered keeping closer to traditional stuff.
First the really bad stuff. Actually it's only one song. He completely transforms JINGLE BELLS into his tribute to all the times he spends on the islands (during Christmas). The song is not, barely, what I would call traditional.
Next the not so good stuff. THANK GOD FOR KIDS is a beautiful but what is it doing on a Christmas cd? ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A REAL GOOD TAN is fun but ruins the original song of "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth".
Now for the good stuff. Kenny's version of I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS is a cowboy's take of this time honored treasure. CHRISTMAS IN DIXIE is a fine piece of work (duet with Randy Owen). THE ANGEL AT THE TOP OF MY TREE is a fast paced Christmas love song. PRETTY PAPER (duet with Willie Nelson) is grand. His version of SILENT NIGHT sent chills up my spine (only Gloria Estefan's version has done this before). His vocals are gentle and very easy on the ears. After he sings the 3 stanzas, he does again but as a duet with The Grisgby Twins. His absolutely wonderful version of O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM is a great tribute to one of the most beautiful times of the year. This version is sending serious chills up my spine (great piano accompaniment).
This is not the best Christmas cd in my collection but it's worth the money and worth the sentiment. Kenny has an interesting take on Christmas. Not quite traditional but certainly original.
