Music Review: A great collection from a great singer.

Having bought this two-CD set recently, I wanted to write a review saying how fine it was. However, all the previous reviewers have, between them, said pretty much everything I intended to say about Kenneth Mckellar's voice , his musicianship, and his ability to find the right emotional tone and character of each individual song and convey them perfectly to the listener. His performances of the songs of his native Scotland are, of course, superb, becoming for many people the definitive versions. People often forget, though, that he was an exceptional singer in the music of other genres and nationalities. These discs include operatic arias, songs from musicals, traditional and composed songs from other countries, such as England, Italy, and Russia, and some which don't fit into any of these categories. What they all have in common is singing of the highest quality. Since this set has been compiled from many albums, there are a few tracks that I didn't care for, not because of the impeccable singing, but because the songs themselves were not to my taste. ( For example, some of the songs from musicals, such as Sunrise,,Sunset and Maria, the Victorian drawing-room songs, On the Road To Mandalay, I'll Walk Beside You, and a few others.) Also, and I know this will annoy some people, I always skip Roamin'In The Gloamin' and The Song Of The Clyde. I love authentic Scottish traditional music, of which I have dozens of discs, but those two have always felt fake, a caricature of genuine Scottish culture written for Sassenachs like myself. But these are only personal quibbles, and certainly not enough to take away a star from the five which this feast of fine singing completely deserves.

Kenneth McKellar's music gave, and will continue to give, so much
pleasure to so many people. Kenneth McKellar died April 9, 2010.
