Music Review: A Phenomenal, Mind-blowing recording.

When you see LA CAGE AUX FOLLES on Broadway you are greeted with a drag queen telling jokes while you wait in line; the lobby is pink and the neon-styled sign is exciting. The cast recording from PSClassics almost recreates the experience.
Along with other recent revivals such as Sunday in the Park With George (2006 London Revival Cast), and A Little Night Music, the orchestrations are significantly reduced. But unlike Jason Carr's past work in those previous shows, here they are bright and energetic. The result is a gritty edginess, perhaps similar to that of the onstage band in CABARET, that hasn't been achieved in other recordings of the show. The orchestrations don't feel like an attempt to save money by cutting musicians, but an artistic choice to create an atmosphere.
The performances are uniformly interesting, with stronger singing performances on the recoding than in the theatre. Douglas Hodge's Tony winning performance, however, is the highlight. No more so than in his performances of "A Little More Mascara" and "I Am What I Am". In the opening of the first song, Hodge shows more emotion and humour in his transition into drag - Zaza, than George Hearn ever achieved in the original recording. Hodge makes it convincing that Zaza gives Albin confidence and self-esteem. Of course, as the story progresses, it is the very thing making Albin happy and confident that causes his stepson to not invite him to an important dinner. Albin can only do what he does best and sings a spectacularly human "I Am What I Am" in drag. The recording captures every nuance - his pauses, quivers, (musical) accents. The tempo rises and he becomes more confident, leading to a final note not sang in the theatre that is almost suspiciously too good. You have to hear it to believe it, I suppose.
Several lines of dialogue including a lead-in to "I Am What I Am" add context and emotion to the songs following it, and give the recording significantly more humour than the original. The dialogue also makes Kelsey Grammer's character (Albin's partner) an integral part of the recording, and the songs seem more tied to the characters and story than ever before.
Like all PSClassics releases, it is a very complete recording of the score and is packaged beautifully.
I think this is the cast recording release of the year, and one of the best in the last several years.
