Music Review: Pretty good cd; too few songs though!
Rating: 4 Stars
First off, I'd like to say that it would be in your best interest to get the Target version, since you get 3 extra new songs, plus 4 live versions for only a 2 or 3 extra dollars. And of the 3 extra new songs, 2 are really good, and one is just okay in my opinion. Here's a breakdown of the tracks:
1) Put You In A Song - Best song on this cd. I'm assuming everyone's heard this already... It's a really catchy, upbeat, unique love song. Great song 10/10
2) You Gonna Fly - A great feel good song; uptempo, very sing-a-long-able, the women of Little Big Town and Sarah Buxton sing backup vocals on this track, and that gives it a great unique sound. 9/10
3) All For You - A very raw love song... it's good and everything, but it's very, very similar (sounding and in meaning) to Without You, which I think is slightly better. 5/10
4) Long Hot Summer - Basically the catchiest song ever! Not very original lyrics... they just sound like every every county-summer song, but the instrumentation is wonderful! 8.5/10
5) Without You - Yep, this song is the better version of All For You. Still not a favorite because, well... it's hard to relate to unless you're in a professional band or a singer. Example: "the traveling, the singing, it don't mean nothing without you. The fast cars, the guitars, they are all just second to this life, this love, that you and I've been dreaming of." 6.7/10
6) Georgia Woods - This song is quite pleasant, the only con of this song is it isn't very memorable. I like it when I listen to it, but can't remember at all what the song was an hour later. 7.2/10
7) Right On Back To You - This is a pretty good sad song. I love the sound effects (like the sound of the ocean) and the beginning and end. 7.5/10
8) Shut Out The Lights - Great song, mostly because of the way the song builds up: it starts slow, and gradually builds to create the sense of urgency, which works amazingly well for the song. It's about an argument with a spouse/etc., and as the song builds you can just picture the people talking faster and louder. 9/10
9 Bonus) Big Promises - This song has an interesting beat for a love song. It's pretty good, love the unique-ness. 8.2/10
10 Bonus) The Luxury Of Knowing - Amazing sad song. This song is so real and honest sounding, it almost makes me cry! Love the raw emotion 9.2/10
11 Bonus) Winning - I did really like this song until the Charlie Sheen "Winning!" catchphrase... now that's all I can think of, unfortunately. If you can get past that part, it is decently good (nice rhyme scheme) except that a few of the lines seem random/irrelevant. 7.2/10
Overall, I think this album is good (4/5 stars) but not as good as some of Keith's other CDs. And other than Put You In A Song, I don't see any songs on par with some of Keith's greats (like "Days Go By" "Once In A Lifetime" and "Somebody Like You").
Also, I would have liked to have seen some more concept diversity, because every song (except maybe one) is about romantic love- being in love, losing love, troubles with love etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I would have liked to see one or two songs with an unforgettable story line, moral, or world-relevance (think "The House That Built Me" or "Hello World by Miranda Lambert and Lady A respectively).
