Music Review: Keith proves he's got what it takes to fly.

I became a fan of Keith's the first time I heard "Love Somebody Like You" from "Golden Road". His energy, passion, emotion, irresistible hooks (and looks), and lyrics that are unpretentious yet beautiful combined with his incredible talent and ability to put on a good show is what makes him such an enjoyable artist.
He can make you throw your arms out to the world and let in the sun with his characteristic carefree spirit and in the next track make you want to break down and cry. He is by far my favorite country artist.
In Defying Gravity, he doesn't introduce anything we haven't heard. His sonic and vocal experimentation of "Love, Pain, and the whole crazy thing" didn't quite work and he must have discovered to stick with what he's good at: feel-good country/pop. Not that any of this material is shallow. On the contrary, I think that the last track "Thank You" is one of the most emotionally brilliant songs I've ever heard from any artist. It's a bare and honest testimony of his past and his life and how he was saved by love. Keith just lays his soul out for you to hear. I didn't move a muscle when I first heard it and by the end I was in tears. And I'm a guy!
The rest of the album, for the most part, showcases Keith's irrepressible optimism. More than anything else, Defying Gravity is about falling in love, summer romance, and opening up your heart. "Kiss a Girl" and "Sweet Thing" are the top summer singles of the album, both full of energy and excitement about falling in love. Sweet Thing, especially, is immensely catchy. "If Ever I Could Love" starts out with an intro you'll be tapping your foot to before a word is sung. I love Keith's use of tribal-type drums toward the end. I would say that this is the highlight track as far as music goes. "Till Summer Comes Around" follows with a moody guitar hook and blue lyrics about a lost love. Beautiful song full of imagery. "My Heart is Open" and "Hit the Ground Runnin" are typical Keith, even if they aren't top-knotch. I could take or leave either of them. "Only You Can Love Me This Way" is a sweet, acoustic ballad reminiscent of "Making Memories of Us". Might be my personal favorite of the album. With "Standing Right in Front of You" and "I'm In" Keith is back with signature style and puppyish enthusiasm about love. "Why's It Feel So Long" employs an interesting calypso, islandy groove that sounds almost like Kenny Chesney. He pulls it off though, and it's a nice, easy-listening track after all the energy of the album. And we've already gone over "Thank You". So powerful
Musically, there's not much gravity that hasn't already been defied by him. The title is probably more about the subject matter, although Keith has always been a tremendously brilliant musician and songwriter. But I think he went a little conservative on this album. There's some variation and experimentation, but not too much. It's basically good, solid music that won't drive away any listeners. And if you were already a fan of Keith's, I think you'll love this album. I would rate it number two of his collection, after "Be Here" which showcased more musical diversity, but still, I was thrilled with it.
