Music Review: Actually, Better than expected; 3 ½

To call Keith Sweat's first new studio album in approximately six years a masterpiece would be an overstatement. What isn't an overstatement is the fact that on JUST ME, even in its flattest moments, Sweat never sounds tired. It may be overwrought to say that he sounds as strong as his "Make It Last Forever" days, but he definitely isn't that far removed, despite the extended hiatus. The key about JUST ME is that Sweat can still "sang", no matter what haters say. Sure, JUST ME sometimes lacks in truly convincing production work and stellar, top-notch material, but Sweat always sounds convincing enough to sell the album's obvious short comings. Sure, JUST ME will most likely fail commercially, but for true, hardcore Sweat fans, it will serve as that long awaited album they've been hoping for for years. In that sense, JUST ME is a success.
Keith Sweat's smartest move on JUST ME is to not totally shut out his 1980s new-jack sound, but to embrace it with some contemporary moves. Sure, the production does often lack in authenticity, particularly "The Floor" where it seems like the productions tries to hard to make the late 40's Sweat a hip-hop-soul star, but it is never as "cheap" as it could've been, at least in my eyes. If I were Sweat and hadn't had a commercially successful album in sometime, one major collaboration would be enough (in this case, his duet with Keyshia Cole).
The album opens strong enough, if the slightest bit awkwardly with "Somebody", which finds Mr. Sweat singing in falsetto. It makes you question what Sweat's intentions were with this track. After a couple of listens, the listener will ultimately embrace this track, but may be thrown for a bit of a curveball at first. Chris "Flo" Connor's rap verse is Ok, but I think Sweat would've been fine without his clunky performance here, six years absent or not. And anyway, most will wonder, who is "Flo" anyway? "The Floor", despite its inauthentic production does work, even if you question what "floor" the almost fifty Sweat is talking about. While again it is nothing innovative, Sweat sells it well in my opinion. "Girl of My Dream" is another overall solid track, if lacking the slightest bit of character, a trend that is common throughout JUST ME. One positive thing that "Girl Of My Dream" does do is more successfully integrate semi-authentic contemporary R&B production than the truly old-school "Somebody" and the somewhat awkward production work of "The Floor".
"Sexiest Girl" still has an old vibe, but it is hip enough. Nothing flashy here, but solid, if unexceptional. "Butterscotch" featuring Athena Cage and "Me and My Girl" heat up things quickly, while the first-rate "Suga, Suga, Suga" introducing Paisley Bettis is by far the highlight of the album, even surpassing the Keyshia Cole featured "Love You Better", another fine track. The remaining four tracks are all solid, but fall flat in comparison to the best ("Never Had A Lover", "Just Wanna Sex You", "What's A Man To Do", and "Teach Me"). Overall, JUST ME does provide just mixed results in some respects, but overall, even the flatter moments are enjoyable to some extent in my opinion. The second coming? No, and not by any means, but it is the first new Keith Sweat studio album in six years, which feels like ten. Good overall. Next time Keith, save up the budget for some A-List songwriters - hey, its worked for The Isley Brothers and Charlie Wilson! 3 ½ stars.
