A Tribute

Kathleen Ferrier is nothing less than one of the greatest singers ever. This blessed alto is iconic and legendary. Ferrier was a pioneer in her repertoir, choosing material by baroque masters seldomly listened too and led the rediscovery of works by Handel, Bach, Gluck, and later Mahler and many more when the growing market and demand for operatic recordings were starting to spread.

At the time people listened to Verdi, Puccini, Bellini or Charpentier with focus un coloratura and bel canto equilibrism. Ferrier's naked, minimalistic renditions of the more sombre repertoir still resulted in a major breakthrough for the old masters and for herself personally.

Kathleen Ferrier's voice had a tessitura, a melancholic colour, long before she and the rest of the world knew that her life was coming to an untimely end. The unique introspective and meditative renditions were never to be equaled.

Other famous altos such as Forrester, Thorborg and later Bumpry, were excellent and were all inspired by Ferrier's choice of material from Bach, Brahms and the stunning rendition of Mahler's "Urlicht", later to be interpreted by Dame Janet Baker with great success.

Ferrier, however, introduced the audiencies to the music that became obligatory to altos and mezzo sopranos and still is.

If you wish to listen to a divine voice with celestial and impeccable phrasing and tonality, do not miss Ferrier.
