Currently embarking on her first American tour, Katherine Jenkins is demonstrating to curious audiences why she is the Welsh classical crossover superstar in Europe. Her recent appearance at World Café Live showcased her latest album, with the help of a versatile 5-piece band (and, I suspect, a few computerized backing tracks, as her second keyboardist stood to play trumpet lines and her primary keyboardist stood to conduct the band - while string orchestrations continued to sound). Jenkins is pursuing a genre-jumping approach similar to Sarah Brightman, but with a couple differences. Jenkins is a mezzo-soprano (a little darker in tone), and Jenkins shows no fear of boundaries, covering Puccini, Fauré, Parton (Dolly), Queen(!), Evanesence(!!). Yet her sound is consistent, making classics of all she covers. Finally, having met her in person, I can attest to her utterly sweet nature; there's no diva aura about her - anywhere. Believe her.
