For her starring role in the Broadway-bound Finian's Rainbow in the spring of 2009, actress-singer Kate Baldwin was hailed by The New York Times as 'a discovery ... her rich, pure soprano riding the crests of the melodies with ease.' Equally at home with the tender ease of 'How Are Things in Glocca Morra?' as she is with the swinging drive of 'Come Back to Me,' Kate mines the rich lyrics of the smoldering 'Paris Is a Lonely Town,' exudes romance and wit in the playful 'How About You?,' and brings down the house with the raucous, robust 'I Don't Think I'll End It All Today.' The songs of Lane and Harburg seem custom-made for Kate's glorious voice, and listeners are the lucky beneficiaries.Looking for a new Broadway star with a voice that has power, beauty, and a dash of sass? Try Kate Baldwin, who starred in the 2009 Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow and earned a Tony nomination. The songs for that little classic were written by Burton Lane and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, and not coincidentally it's Burton and Harburg who are the subjects of Baldwin's solo debut, Let's See What Happens. While most of the 15 songs are collaborations with others, four are by Burton and Harburg together, including one of Finian's big hits, "How Are Things in Gloca Morra?" The song is so lyrical, yet treacherous with its intricate melody, and the spare arrangement leaves no place to hide--Baldwin delivers it beautifully. The other very familiar song, Lane and Ralph Freed's "How About You?", is alongside a bevy of other charmers, winningly performed by Baldwin, musical director Rob Berman, and guest stars Jonathan Tunick and His Broadway Moonlighters. Baldwin brings to mind an early Kristin Chenoweth in that she seems perfectly suited to period styles, yet would also appear to have the talent for any variety of future projects.
