Music Review: Sweet, cookin' tracks

This CD was my first introduction to Karrin Allyson - I found it in a bargain bin, which turned out to be a travesty as this is a great album. The faster tracks (especially 'One Note Samba'and 'Yeh Yeh') are witty and agile, but it's the ballads that distinguish this from the others. I haven't heard many more soulful versions of 'I Cover the Waterfront' or 'Dindi', and Ellington's classic 'In A Sentimental Mood' receives wistful treatment here. With a great band (including New Zealand's own Alan Broadbent on piano!), clever arrangements, and Allyson's straight-forward, no-fuss yet dolcissimo voice, this CD will be oft-played if you like your jazz served clean and accessible.
