With this well-produced album from Concord Records, "Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane," Karrin Allyson has proven that her voice can be a charming instrument by itself. She possesses one of the most beautiful voices amongst jazz singers of today. For Karrin Allyson, singing is not enough to impress her listeners - she can scat and she can also play the piano.
This recording is simply splendid! It is among the absolute best from the world of vocal jazz. I love it from start to finish and even if I had a magic wand, I would not change a thing about this album. There is no weak link on the entire tracks from the fitting opener, "Say It (Over And Over Again)" to the perfect ender, "Every Time We Say Goodbye."
Without a team of fine musicians who have ears for pretty melodies and who can do wonders with their respective instruments, this album would not be as fascinating as it is, so my kudos to James Williams (piano), John Patitucci (acoustic bass), Lewis Nash (drums), Steve Wilson (soprano sax), James Carter and Bob Berg (tenor sax).
Karrin Allyson is very good at dramatizing the sentiments behind a song like she does with some of the emotional highlights from the repertoire that can move the listener's musical sensibilities such as Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's "It's Easy To Remember," Harry Warren and Mack Gordon's "I Wish I Knew," and Robert Haggart and Johnny Burke's "What's New?"

After immersing my ears with the enchantment of Grammy-nominated-album, Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman," I thought it's time for me to give Karrin Allyson's very own tribute to the greatness of John Coltrane. I'm so glad I did. And for a worthy recommendation, I would like to thank a friend of mine who truly knows what a great jazz album is all about. This is it!
Now it's my turn to spread the word...this album is irresistible! With my heartfelt recommendation for your listening pleasure always and forever.
