Music Review: Deeply moving "Stabat Mater", excellent set overall

This is a bargain and a half. Szymanowski's "Stabat Mater" would get my vote for the greatest choral work of the 20th century (I consider it superior to Stravinsky's magnificent "Symphony of Psalms"), and yes, "Stabat Mater" has to be called a masterpiece. I have only heard this recording of the work, as well as Rattle performing it live in concert, so I don't have any other recordings to compare it to, but regardless, this it is an incredibly powerful and deeply moving piece of music. The incredible soprano in this work, Elzbieta Szmytka, makes me melt (and the other soloists are uniformly excellent too). The other selections on the disc are also excellent but none of the other works can be considered in the same exalted status as "Stabat Mater", as good as they are. If you don't know this music, this disc is a no-brainer.
