Music Review: What the...?!

I'm puzzled that Paul Hillier, after doing such great work with Theatre of Voices and the Hilliard Ensemble, would release a recording of Karlheinz Stockhausen's music. Stockhausen, arguably the most controversial modernist composer, has written serial and modern music that makes Schoenberg look conservative. That's why I'm puzzled- this music has nothing to do with Hillier's earlier work, nor will it appeal to the same audience. Here's basically how Stimmung works: the 6 singers tune to an inaudible (to the audience) b-flat drone, then they work from a "form scheme" and a set of 51 "models" that contain the basic performance material--who sings what pitch, rhythmic and tempo information, vowel sounds, syllables, random words (e.g., days of the week, "Hallelujah", "barbershop", etc.), poems, and a list of 66 "magic names" (drawn from various world religions) that are spoken at various points. In other words, that's quite different from the work of Arvo Part, Lassus, Josquin, William Byrd, and the many other composers whose music Hillier has recorded (though he has done one John Cage album, I think).

You either get this music or you don't. I don't get it. I get no pleasure listening to it, and I don't understand the purpose of it. To elaborate, none of the "models" have any definite direction in either rhythm, melody, or harmony. The main problem with Stockhausen is that his music is too abstract and esoteric, and cannot be brought into the "real world" without a lot of strain. I do enjoy some contemporary composers- Messiaen and Penderecki, for example, so this is not about not liking contemporary music or ideas. Stockhausen just eludes me. I read somewhere that Stockhausen is not so much an emperor with no clothes as a set of clothes in search of an emperor. I think that's accurate. The one good thing about this album is that the singers do a good job with what must be a tortuously difficult score.
