Music Review: Adiemus' grandest album

As a classical music fan, I'm a bit picky about experiments that mix classical structures with "tribal" textures. But in the hands of a contemporary genius as Karl Jenkins, you have to recognize that what these crossovers can do can be quite spectacular. That been said, I consider Cantata Mundi to be Karl Jenkins' Adiemus Project towering achievement, both for the quality of the music and the brilliance with which the whole endeavour is brought up. This is by far the most lush sounding of all Adiemus recordings (even though the orchestration of Dances Of Time is a little bit more colourful due to the slightly expanded woodwind section)with the London Philharmonic outpouring a truly rich, round, filmic, post-romantic tone. As for the voices, Miriam Stockley is in top form, her creamy voice enveloping every melody, with the assistance of Mary Carewe providing a halo of harmonies to the music, which by itself propels into Eternity. The haunting sound of Pamela Thorby's recorders and gemshorn adds a mystical atmosphere, and to underpin all of this a magnificient electro-acoustic percusion section with tinges of Middle Eastern, Indian and Asian colours which account for the "Song of the World" philosophy of the set. So forget all the tags attached to this kind of genre (New Age, ambient, etc.): if you love good music, you'll never regret having this album.
