Music reviews of My Beautiful Dark Twisted FantasyMusic Review: Kanye West's Epic Tale Rating: 5 Stars
Kanye West has been in the Hip Hop game for many years but his career as a true Hip Hop star began 6 years ago. Within those 6 years he has dropped 4 classic albums, produced many hits for many music artists as well as causing some controversy. Kanye West is no stranger to the media, 2009 was not a particulary good year for West, being bagged by the media for his now infamous interruption at the MTV Music Awards. As well as the death of his mother in 2008, the critiscm of racism towards Bush in 2005 and past relationships that did not go so well, Kanye West has been through alot throughout his career. However, you cannot disregard his genius in music, whether or not you like the guy, he is truly a visionary in music. Being able to combine different genre's together and making it sound as good as he does is truly hard to do these days where genre's are very one track minded. The College Dropout was the start of his career known for his witty humorous lyrics, fast soulful sampling and radio friendly songs. Late Registration was a much more mature approach by Kanye experimenting more with a more orchaestrated sound full of strings and horns as well as a more love for life in his lyrics. Graduation was a more Pop sound including techno and synthesizers's, and the flaw of gradution was the lyrics in graduation, Kanye was at the top of his game and I guess felt like he didn't have to try as hard to impress with his lyrics and took more of a bragadocious approach with his lyrics. 808's & Heartbreak was not a Hip Hop album in a sense, but more like a musical confessional letter to music listeners, Kanye was in a very dark place during that time and had to vent in someway, and while some may dislike that album, I felt the album was very necessary even though Kanye's singing with the autotune effect may not be easy on the ears.
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an album that deserves every merit it recieves. This is a Kanye that is hungry for more, and is searching to kill everyone in his path. Every track on this album has been carefully crafted in order to create an epic tale of life, love & power in Kanye's eyes. Kanye's rap schemes have more aggressiveness, which is something we haven't seen in a long time from Mr. West. The production on this album is very credible, the scale of sounds in this album is truly remarkable in every sense, it is a loud and proud sound to prove that Kanye is one of the best Hip Hop artists of all time. This album features a large amount of guest appearences, and artists such as Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Bon Iver, Kid Cudi and Pusha T can be heard more than twice on the album. But even with all of these atrists featured, the album does not feel overwhelmed, and you can still tell this is primarily Kanye's album despite the fact that Kanye is never truly by himself on a track. This album is already considered to be Kanye's best album to date and is also cited as a postmodern classic. I'm speculating this album will sale a lot of units as well as earn a lot of awards in the near future (Grammy Album of the Year).
1) Dark Fantasy - The album starts off with a little intro from Nicki Minaj using a fake british accent (very amusing though) and starts off with Kanye's first line "i Fantasize this back in Chicago" beginning his epic tale to let you into his twisted fantasy. The track features production of the RZA which was very exciting for me being a Wu-Tang fan, its dark and gritty which really takes it back to the golden age of hip hop, has a very old school feel to it. The hook is very catchy and very eerie. Kanye proves with this track how clever he really is when it comes to rapping, "Too many urkels on your team, thats why your wins-low" and with that said he gets you ready for the amazingness that he is about to bring us with this album. 5/5
2) Gorgeous feat. Kid Cudi & Raekwon - This song takes a break from the ruggedness of the first song and features a more calm beat. Although the lyrics are in fact pretty dark its still considered a light hearted song. Kid Cudi provides the hook while Kanye lets his haters know wassup. Raekwon drops in at the end providing a good verse and its nice to know that Kanye likes to team up with true Hip Hop Artists. 4/5
3) Power feat. Dwele - Everyone should know this song by now. This is Kanye's return to form from the 808's & Heartbreak sound. Kanye is truly back to rapping and all three verses prove even though his ego may be big, he has earned every right to be the way he is. He truly has the power to make your life so exciting. The production on this track is truly amazing. featuring a sample from King Crimsons "21st Century Schizoid Man" as well as soulful backdrop from Dwele this song is already an instant classic. 5/5
4) All of the Lights (Interlude) - What I like about Kanye the most is his taste in music, this interlude is beautiful and even though only 1 minute long, I almost cryed by the soft piano and beautiful strings. 5/5
5) All of the Lights - I heard this song way back at the end of summer and it featured one of my favorite artists Drake. However, Kanye has taken a different apporach and decided to take Drake out and add 10 artists instead. This track features Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Fergie, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Elton John, Charlie Wilson, Kid Cudi, John Legend, Tony Williams & Elly Jackson all on one track. Rihanna does the catchy hook, Kid Cudi does a short interlude, Fergie drops a breif verse, Alicia Keys and Elton John combine at the end ending the monstrous track. This track is a prime example of how great Kanye is as a producer being able to combine different vocals being used as instruments to create one legendary track. I just wish the track was a little longer and had the Drake verse that originally was featured. 5/5
6) Monster feat. Bon Iver, Rick Ross, Jay-Z & Nicki Minaj - I heard this song back during the summer and honestly I did not like it as much. I thought the collaboration was a bit random and the song was a bit too long for its own good. But that was then, and NOW I love this track. Each artist provides a great verse, Kanye West explains how much effect his presence has, Jay-Z tells how powerful he is in the rap and Rick Ross gets us ready for whats to come. Nicki Minaj however RIPS THIS TRACK TO SHREDS, she pulls out every trick she has implementing her weird ass attitude and even weirder lyrics. Bon Iver does a great job doing a haunting intro and outro. 5/5
7) So Appalled feat. Swizz Beatz, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Prynce Ci Hi & the RZA - Yet another track featuring a variety of artists. Jay-Z comes in again with one of the best verses I've heard from him in a while. Kanye does a decent job with his verse. The song features G.O.O.D. Music artists Pusha T from the Clipse and newcomer Prynce Ci Hi and they give the track an extra edge that is much appreciated. What makes this track so exciting for me is to hear RZA's voice at the end, even though he is doing the hook, it was just legendary to have him on the track ( at least in my opinion). 4.5/5
8) Devil in a New Dress feat. Rick Ross - This is probably my least favorite track on the album but it is still an above average track. This is the only track on the album not fully produced by Kanye but it is a very catchy track. And while I don't normally like Rick Ross, I believe his addition to the song was very necessary and a good idea. 4/5
9) Runaway feat. Pusha T - This song is the longest track on the album reaching about 9 minutes in length. The song was first heard at the 2010 VMA's and was reviewed very well. At first listen, I was not very impressed with the musicality of the track, I felt it the simple piano beat behind the Pete Rock sample wasn't very impressive. But after a while I began to appreciate the message of the song and the lyrics was what got my attention. This song is the most personal on this album and is a straight message to everybody that has hated on Kanye. This song is also about Kanye's thought about life, he just wished he could runaway from all the world in itself just wishes people could understand his intentions despite how different his views are. Pusha T has a good verse but I believe someone else could've been on the track instead of him. The first 5 1/2 minutes of the some is the core while the last 3 1/2 are just pure instrumentals. If you think Kanye was done with auto-tune, you are dead wrong. However, he uses the autotune effect not for singing but like another instrument. While I believe that the length was a bit too prolonged it is still a remarkable track. 5/5
10) Hell of a Life - Here we take a step back from the reality of Kanye and back into the fantasy life. Here Kanye talks about marrying a pornstar living the life he thought he would ever want to live. The production is gritty almost like a rock track. This track has the most grittiest with distorted sounds and a great hook by Kanye. It's really an interesting song that seperates itself from the rest of the album. 5/5
11) Blame Game feat. John Legend - A beautifully constructed track in which Kanye becomes a bit vulnerable. It is a confessional track where Kanye admits the wrongs he has done during his past relationship (possibly with Amber Rose). The first verse is heartfelt John Legend while the second verse Kanye confesses. The third verse is a combination of Kanye's voice in different pitches. Amongst all the seriousness of the song, the track ends with humorous skit from Chris Rock. Yet another long track being almost 8 minutes, it is also one of the best of the album . 5/5
12) Lost in the World feat. Bon Iver - The song starts off with a slow excerpt from Bon Iver's song "Woods" and builds up from there. A very fitting way to end off a great album. Full of loud african drums and great singing from both artists. It has been a great ride and this album was just pure ear candy to those who appreciate real hip hop and just great music in general. The song is just a continuation of Kanye's journey to the next world and evolution as a human being. I love the premise of the song and the overall message. Kanye is just a lost soul trying to find his rightful place in the world and an overall understanding with life. Great song, I Love it. 5/5
13) Who Will Surivive in America - An outro featuring an inspirational excerpt from Gil-Scott Heron's Comment #1. I'm glad I bought this album. Everyone should go out and get it just to support G.O.O.D. music and Kanye.
