Music Review: A terrific progressive rock effort from an American band

Usually all the best progressive rock efforts come from Europe, that of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Genesis, The Moody Blues, and the such. But, if I were to allow myself to praise an American progressive rock band, that would have to be Kansas.
Of the six tracks on this album, three are typical rock standards, but the other three are excellent extensions of mind blowing progressive rock.
The title track puts out some excellent piano work with Kerry Livgren showing what he can do if he had the spotlight on himself in the midst of the track, and on Lamplight Symphony, you get an excellent wash of synthesized effects in a very energetic display of rock and orchestration. And to close side two, the 12 minute track Incomudro-Hymn to the Atman, you get more intense rock orchestration including Phil Ehart's aggressive drum solo amidst the intensified support of the band.
Although, the following year's next two albums, Leftoverture and Point of Know Return, really through Kansas into the rock radio format, it was this earlier album of Song for America that introduced me to Kansas before most anyone else in Detroit may have heard of them.
I can do without the bonus live tracks. These were just put in so they can re-sell the CD again. Typical of Columbia Records. Epic, Legacy, whatever....
