Music reviews of Tiger Suit

Music Review: Tiger Suit - Something for everyone to like (and dislike)
Rating: 4 Stars

This is from my music blog, [...]

Until now, Tunstall's discography was mostly comprised of a narrow variety of stripped acoustic and electric pop rock - good in it's own right, but formulaic in its inception. But, a heavy electronica influence has been smeared on KT Tunstall's release this week of Tiger Suit - a divergence from her previous discography, but bound to be an enjoyable direction for a portion of her listeners.

The new LP is a mix of Eurodance electronica roots a la Cascada, tribal elements a la Enya and occasionally, a ghastly poppy glockenspiel a la... I dunno, the A-Teens? (But we won't hold that against her, shes Scottish... they do that sort of stuff, I suppose.)

The first six tracks of the albums are very much created with the aforementioned elements, they reek of Europop - occasionally in a good way, but not always. They have driving beats, lots of electronic elements, and some heavy tribal vocals - especially evident on Uummannaq Song (a track named after a village in Iceland). Complete with a few tracks that feature an abrasive glockenspiel, it's not very digestible, but it is inventive compared to the rest of Tunstall's discography. I have to give credit to a woman who would name an album after a recurring dream:

"Part of the reason for its name is this recurring dream that I've had since I was a kid. There's a tiger outside and I'm with it and stroking it, then I go inside and it's not until I look through the window that I realise `That's mad, I could have been eaten! What was I thinking?'"

We've always liked Tunstall for her quirkiness anyways...

But listening to this album is like watching a child grow through adolescence. By the time Golden Frames, track 7 comes around, KT matures, both vocally and musically, and we're starting to hear some of the classic elements that fans will recognize: choral antiphony and riffing electric guitar on top of a subtle percussion foundation. I'm comforted that the album is maturing track by track. An entire techno album is laughable, but a little experimentation for the kids preceding some high-quality tracks for the grownups is a good formula: appeasing the artists' creative itch while maintaining core elements that the fan base will enjoy. It's tactfully done - a good volley to give all listeners something to like (and dislike).

The back half of the album has some surprises, both good and not-so-good. Madame Trudeaux has a very White Stripes feel to it, with reverberated lo-fi vocals, double-time simple-kit drums and insistent guitar phrasing. The closing track, The Entertainer, is a bit of a lullaby with ambient vocals and that damn glockenspiel again, but it seems more fitting here than the front half of the album.

Pretentious Approval: The album has a distinctive split; the second half of the album is the KT we all love for her musicianship and quirkiness.

Bitter Disappointment: Tracks 1-6 are abrasively electronic Europop - recording the album in Berlin was probably not a good idea.

Verdict: You should hear this album, I suppose, but I remain tepid. The distinct split in the album means that new and old fans of KT Tunstall will at least find something to listen to and enjoy. I'd advise buying this album, but by individually previewing tracks. Electronica is very polarizing and you are bound to either love or loathe the disc in its entirety.

Description of Tiger Suit

Tiger Suit was recorded in Berlin's Hansa Studios, where several legendary albums, including David Bowie's Heroes, U2's Achtung Baby, and Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, were made. "There's a lovely self-sufficiency in Berlin, where people are just doing whatever they want to," Tunstall says. "It really informed everything. There was an angular nature to what we were playing and a fierceness that I felt was very appropriate for what I'd written."

The Berlin odyssey set the scene for Tunstall's awakening to the wonderful world of synthesizers. "I was very scared of them because I felt that they would be an albatross around the music," she says. But that was before IAMX, aka former Sneaker Pimp Chris Corner, supplied her with a couple of "transporting" arrangements. "Then every synth came out of the box and I entered a world that I am completely smitten with now." Pride of place in Tunstall's armory went to the Yamaha CS-80 -- Vangelis' weapon of choice on the Blade Runner soundtrack -- which she describes as "a huge beast, like playing a couch."

Without sacrificing any of her personal storytelling touch, the sonic landscape of Tiger Suit shifts from the uninhibited tribal yelp of "Uummannaq Song," inspired by her Greenland foray, to the analog drone-meets-oriental chime and flutter of "Lost," by way of "Push That Knot Away," which she calls a signature track on the album. "It's about confronting fear rather than running away." Then there's the rollicking first single, "Fade Like A Shadow," which Tunstall explains is about a person who haunted her for many months. "The person is still very much alive, but my interactions with them led to these weird, almost visitation-like feelings that I found difficult to shake off."

Elements of all the influences that make up Tiger Suit come together on "(Still A) Weirdo." A beautiful acoustic guitar line floats through organic and electronic rhythm sounds, while the lyrics are some of Tunstall's most personal. "It's one of those rare moments where you can see yourself objectively and look into your own emotional machinery and realize what you are," Tunstall says. The journey continues through the extra-terrestrial blues of "Golden Frames" (featuring the formidable Seasick Steve), and the glam strut of the anecdotal "Madame Trudeaux," to the up-tempo swagger and hum of "Glamour Puss."

"Making the album felt a bit like an archaeological dig," Tunstall says. "I had to dig deep to uncover what most turns me on. The best way I can describe it is that I discovered the indigenous part of myself by going back to campfire dance music just as much as club dance music. When I grind my boot heel into the floor, it's connected to when I went clubbing in Berlin. Losing yourself in the middle of nowhere around a fire is no different to losing yourself surrounded by hundreds of people on a dancefloor."
