Music Review: Upbeat Chobits Album

My only complaint with this CD of BGM/soundtrack for the wonderful anime series Chobits is with its length - there are only a dozen selections, running a total of some 35 minutes. Rather than giving the full-if-long complete album, it has been divided into this "Original Soundtrack 001" and an accompanying 002 in order to maximize profits. This is the sole reason for not rating it at the five stars the music deserves. Having said all that, the result is still a pleasure for devoted fans of Chobits. The twelve selections are:

It has been observed here in another review that the second closing theme, "Ningyo Hime" or "Mermaid Princess" is absent from this collection. It appears the selections on 001 are primarily from the light-hearted first half of the series, leaving the music from the second half for 002. ( Light-colored album cover with a smiling Chi vs. dark cover featuring a worried-looking Chi - like "Light Chi" and "Dark Chi" - get it? ) Most of these are the happy, bubbly confections of jazz and pop appropriate to the beginnings of the relationship between Chi and Hideki. Only the frenzied antics suggested by "Breathless"; the touching "Two of Us"; and my favorite, the almost heartbreakingly poignant "Portrait of Tenderness", indicate the trials to come for our unlikely couple.
The musical selections composed by K-Taro Takanami are mainly as they appear in the series, though some are extended versions, like both opening and closing themes. Other than the repetitive "Ba - Ba - Ba" choruses, the opening vocal is performed by NINO and the ending vocal by Rie Tanaka, Japanese voice of Chi, who also "introduces" several of the cuts with humorous Chi dialogue including the somewhat notorious but hiliarous "Pan-su - pan-su. Pansu. Pansu, pansu!" Any real fan of the series should be delighted with this album!
