In this EP, Cog have effectively created a unique sound, well written and well produced (amazing, considering they ploughed away on an 8-track to record it).
We are presented, here, with an overall dark sound, a brooding intensity which seems here to be let wild, especially in the opening track "moshiach", and the live favourite "bondi". Most of the songs are quite progressive and mostly transcend conventional song structure. Songs flow seamlessly from the calm and to the heavy, contrasting effectively, in an almost dreamlike fashion. One moment we are gliding along, guitars touching the surface tentatively, vocals caressing the soundscape, before a shocking "bashing brains out" heavy, melodic change of sound.
The standout track for me, was the longest (which is characteristic for me on most albums), 1010011010. The song progresses freely, each motif drifting to the next, as we see singer Flynn go from a near-falsetto to a masculine roar, and drummer Lucius effortlessly changing time and accent. "Moo" has a great climax in the song's mid-section, each of the parts brushing against each other, resulting in a near euphoric moment.
All in all, this is a successful EP, it won't change the course of history, but by God, its good music.
Cog's Just Visiting Part 2 is arguably better produced and more progressive than its sister part 1. The Open Up single is a step up in terms of production, as the band cover a Public Image Limited Song. Cog releases their long awaited debut album "the New Normal" on April 12th this year.
