Music reviews of Power in Numbers (Limited Edition w/ Bonus DVD)Music Review: "Power in Numbers" gains Power in Principle Rating: 5 Stars
Hip-hop music's current stage is experiencing an energetic surge with the brand new release that has heads bumping and mouths rhyming. The six-man crew of Jurassic Five again proves its ability to enable four MCs to sound like one. The group resurrects the spirit of old school hip-hop with the release of their current album, "Power In Numbers." For the LA raised group the first album gained nationwide success with its energetic, high-spirited beat. As a result, producing a second album could not have been an easy task to master. As usual, Jurassic Five (J5) accomplished this task with ease and was, once again, up to par with the expectations of the listeners. Jurassic Five has again redefined the art of hip-hop through showing their ability to speak rhymes that are not only lyrics true to the heart, but speak the truth as well. It is refreshing to see a hip-hop group that does not focus on the trends of society, but rather on what they believe and have faith in. Jurassic Five has been able to bring back the simplicity of hip-hop's early days, before the million dollar videos and profit-driven marketing schemes were an eye-line focus. Their second, full-length album "Power in Numbers" has already achieved tremendous success across North America, with its recent release in mid-October. The Los Angeles based group has not only wowed us with their first release, "Quality Control", but has produced another soon to be million dollar album. Jurassic Five has been able to take hip-hop to an entirely different level of performance and ability. The group shows a profound capability to release the spirits that lay in old school hip hop, where the only thing that seemed to matter to the artists were to make good music, and to most importantly, have fun. The differences between the first and second album are quite evident; the second album portraying more of a hard rock spirit and as MC MARC 7 states "It's a sign of the times. Things are happening in the world and, of course, it affects us on an artistic level." In the song "Freedom", MC Akil lays down a passage about the lasting prophecy of peace:"What means the world to me is being free Live and let live and just let it be Love, peace and harmony one universal family." This song covers many problems that society is now faced with, such as Third World poverty and the downfalls of the American penitentiary system. This is a steady representation of how times are changing and the effects that today's society has on everyone; even celebrities. The rhymes that are produced in this second album still portray the same Jurassic Five spirit and quality with old school nature and rhythm, always initiated through their old Jazz beats. In other parts of the album, new style and sounds can be found, such as the song "Break". This tune releases a classic J5 attitude that speaks volumes in its bounce and lyrical playfulness but it's heavier sound gives it a slightly new feel than other, more classic songs that have been performed by the group. In "Power In Numbers" the two DJ's Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark play with their forms of style and release new mixes with help from their role models JuJu of the Beatnuts, Sledge and Omas. The two DJs focus heavily on clean cut breaks and in addition, mix profoundly with the rhymes from the rest of the members: MCs Chali 2na, Zaakir (Soup), Akil and Marc 7. These clean cut, and easily distinguishable beats are found within the songs "If You Only Knew," "What's Golden," "Break" and "React". The song "If You Only Knew" is a track that is completely dedicated to the struggles the group has gone through. This song shows all fans the barriers that the group has to overcome, and how much of a blessing it is that they are even still together as one. "If You Only Knew" is mixed unmistakably with perfection and the harmonized hook that is found within it is so smooth that it is nearly inaudible unless you are looking for it. The song "Acetate Prophets" lets the DJs become more in touch with their African and South American culture with emerging chants and rhythms as well as a collection of Asian string instruments and drums. This song lets you experience the true heritage of the hip-hop nature and allows you to experience life through the ways of other cultures. J5 makes a clear attempt to broaden their audience through the inclusion of Canadian-born pop star Nelly Furtado in their song "Thin Line". This feature song, as well as "Remember His Name" both reveal the dark tales of urban passions. This new innovation that has strongly influenced Jurassic Five allows for intricate rhymes and tangling story lines, which in turn produce an influencing and philosophical understanding of the true meaning of the song. Within this album, Jurassic Five focuses, once again, on setting themselves apart from the rest of the hip-hop community. They accomplish this mission with great success, as each song individually focuses upon different story lines and beats, allowing difference and integrity within the album. This album deserves a full star rating because of the groups' ability to continually produce off the market, fresh lyrics and beats that supply the same energetic surge that the listeners are continually looking for.

Description of Power in Numbers (Limited Edition w/ Bonus DVD)Jurassic 5 Power In Numbers US 2-disc CD/DVD set Two years after Jurassic 5's debut album, Quality Control, proved that B-boy-oriented retro-rap doesn't have to be corny, the six-member crew (four MCs and two DJs) seems to be gearing up for the revolution. While fans of Quality Control's bright sound will still find much to enjoy here, J5's sophomore offering does a good job at extending their sound. Opening with "Freedom," a quiet yet focused call to action, Power in Numbers presents a slightly darker vision of hip-hop nirvana than the group offered first time around. In keeping with the album's title, J5 has also expanded its crew--Percy P. (of the early-'90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque "A Day at the Races," and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy "Thin Line." On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy "If You Only Knew" and the considerably bleaker "One of Them." --Rebecca Levine
