Julian Bream recorded the "Aranjuez", or "Orange juice" as he would himself say, five times altogether. That's almost once every ten years. The first version was in 1964 with Sir Colin Davis, the second in '74 with John Elliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Orchestra, the third (first digital) with Gardiner again and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the fourth in 1985 with the latter Orchestra and Sir Charles Groves on DVD, and this last one with Sir Simon Rattle.
This is truly the best and most poetic version ever recorded of that concerto. The plus with this one is that you get two other works, the great Takemitsu piece and the excellent Arnold Concerto recorded by Bream here for the second time.
What a genius Julian Bream was! He deserves a good retirement.
