Music Review: fine "two-fer" CD of Garland's artistry

Judy Garland will remain the world's greatest entertainer for ages to come. In fact, I doubt we'll ever see another quite like her. Judy was able to lead her adoring audiences wherever she wanted them to go; and the chemistry between her and her followers was magical. This "two-fer" CD gives us insight as to why.
I call this a "two-fer" CD because it contains all the tracks from two of Judy's record albums entitled That's Entertainment and I Could Go On Singing with music from the movie of the same name. Excellent!
The CD track set begins with the twelve numbers from That's Entertainment; we start with Judy singing "That's Entertainment." Judy's voice never sounded better; and the percussion along with the horns and the strings enhance the beauty of this number. Judy sings "That's Entertainment" with such gusto that you know she can tackle anything. Wow! "Who Cares? (As Long As You Care For Me)" gives us a somewhat jazzier number; Judy delivers this without a superfluous note--great! The musical arrangement glows like gold but it leaves Judy's voice front and center.
"Puttin' On The Ritz" starts with a great saxophone flourish and when Judy comes in she really takes flight! The tempo changes serve to enhance the number and Judy's voice truly acts as its own instrument to go hand in hand with the music. I predict that you will enjoy "Puttin' On The Ritz" very, very much.
"Down With Love" showcases Judy's voice yet again as the horns embellish this number; and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" gets the royal treatment from Judy and the musicians as they perform this with just a few changes to make this number belong just to Judy and Judy alone! The pretty melody belies the sadness of the lyrics of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" In addition, "Just You, Just Me" sports a jazzier than usual flavor and Judy never misses a beat--great!
The last nine tracks on this album come from the record album and the movie entitled I Could Go On Singing. The movie soundtrack of Judy performing an abridged version of "I Could Go On Singin' (Till The Cows Come Home)" truly is a masterpiece Judy gives to us as a gift; Judy delivers this flawlessly with passion, soul and a panache that I rarely hear and enjoy. Love those horns on "I Could Go On Singin'!"
"Hello Bluebird" features Judy at the top of her game yet again; "Hello Bluebird" seems fresh and new as you listen to Judy sing it. Judy was THAT good--she could make any song sound fresh and new with her remarkably sensitive, careful interpretations of classic ballads. "I Am The Monarch Of The Sea" comes from the soundtrack of I Could Go On Singing; Judy sings so well with these children. Moreover, "By Myself" showcases Judy's sublime rendition of this melancholy ballad; and the musical arrangement supports Judy very well. Judy handles the tempo changes as only a pro can and she makes "By Myself" all her own by singing this number with great sensitivity and panache.
There are two instrumental tracks from I Could Go On Singing; and the final track ends the album fittingly with another, complete rendition of "I Could Go On Singin' (Till The Cows Come Home)." Judy adds a great intro for this finale; and she leaves you wanting more just as her adoring audiences always wanted more when her concerts ended.
The liner notes include an informative essay by Scott Schechter; and we get the original liner notes from both record albums, too. The artwork reflects great judgment.
Judy Garland lives on despite the passage of time because you just can't keep classic performances like this stored away in a storage shed gathering dust. Judy pours her heart and soul into these great performances; and I predict that the world will enjoy Judy's singularly beautiful talent for ages to come.
