Music Review: good but incomplete--where's another song or two?

(3.5 stars) Over The Rainbow & Other Hits has just some of Judy Garland's best musical numbers from her films at MGM; and for that reason I just can't give this a five star review. Someone like Judy comes along only once in a very long while and I think they should have given us more here. For example, a song from the movie Girl Crazy could easily have been added to this disc. However, what we do get is high quality control music here; after all, this is THE one and only Judy Garland singing! The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.
The CD starts with Judy's signature song and her best known number; "Over The Rainbow." This is from the soundtrack of The Wizard Of Oz; I never heard a more beautiful female singer than Judy when she sings this tune. The next track is from Judy's last film at MGM entitled Summer Stock; she sings "Get Happy" with panache and I'm very impressed. Judy never skips a beat and she pours her heart into every word of this song. "Get Happy" was another number Judy sang all throughout her career; she even reworked it a bit in the mid 1960s to have a "rock" sound to it. However, the version we get here is THE definitive rendition of this Judy Garland ballad.
"The Boy Next Door" from Meet Me In Saint Louis features Judy singing closer to the lower end of her vocal range; but make no mistake about it--Judy performs wondrously and that's grand. Judy handles complex tempo and key changes like the champ she always was; and the musical arrangement make good use of the strings.
Judy's medley of "Dear Mr. Gable" and "You Made Me Love You" comes from one her earlier films at MGM entitled Broadway Melody of 1938. This tune features a young Judy singing her heart out; and her performance is nothing short of stellar. Impressive! The word is that when the moviegoers watched her sing this song in the movie, they actually applauded when she finished the song even though it was a movie and not a live performance! We also get a fine treatment of "Easter Parade" from the movie of the same name; Judy delivers this like only she could. Her delivery is perfect and "Easter Parade" is yet another major highlight of this album. Then again, I don't think there is a dud in the bunch here!
We get an excerpt of "On The Atchison, Topeka, And The Santa Fe;" and this is followed by Judy singing "The Trolley Song" from Meet Me In Saint Louis. This tune also became one of Judy's signature songs and just one listen will tell you why! "Look For The Silver Lining" charms me with its beauty; this features Judy squarely front and center--right where she belonged and still belongs! "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" gets a most sensitive interpretation from Judy; and the musical arrangement fits in perfectly with her vocals. The music never steals the show from Judy; and this works wonders for "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." The CD also ends strong with Judy Garland performing "For Me And My Gal" from the MGM movie of the same name; she aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing! It really wasn't that easy; but Judy's talents carry her through very admirably.
Judy Garland was so special that a budget CD like this simply can't do justice to her work at MGM. This CD is best suited for the casual fan who wants a brief introduction to the magical artistry of the great Judy Garland; diehard fans will do better getting box sets of Judy's songs.
