Music Review: The Garland Sound: Rare and Wonderful
Rating: 5 Stars

In recent years I often look on sceptically at re-releases of Garland material. The compilations are often in poor sound or just a rehash of what most Galrand collectors already own. Therefore, I am happy to report that "Classiques Et Inedits" (1929-1956) is a pleasant surprise with its previously unreleased radio tracks and high sounding quality in the commericial MGM, Decca, and Columbia Recordings. In fact, get this: "Without a Memory", "Go Home Joe", "Send My Baby Back to Me", and "Heartbroken" are offered in Dolby Pro Logic surround sound! That's right! And while this technical advancement in sound does not quite work with these vocals (Garland's voice as well as all of the instruments project from all of the speakers) there's no denying that these songs have never sounded so crisp, so fresh, and so new. The first CD opens with some rare 1929 Vitaphone records: "Blue Butterfly" and "Hang On To A Rainbow". These are followed by some excellent transfers from Garland's 78 rpm records including Decca's "Stompin at the Savoy", "I'm Just Wild About Harry", "Over the Rainbow"; and MGM's "You Can Do No Wrong", "Who?", and "Get Happy". The second CD has even more treats in store with twenty transcribed radio songs including Garland's first radio broadcast, "Broadway Rhythm". Listening to early Judy clearly demonstrates why MGM was so confused on just what to do with this incredible fourteen year old talent with a voice, as George Jessel once put it, "of a woman who has been hurt". Other goodies include "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" (1935), "Love's Sweet Song" (with lyrics by Garland and music composed by then husband,David Rose, "Daddy", "Somebody To Watch Over Me", and "Smiles". While the sound quality varies from track to track (and one or two of the tracks appear to have been recorded at the wrong speed) this is a unique collection of Garland material; to listen to alone and/or to share with others.

Music Review: The Songs that Got Away.
Rating: 5 Stars

One of the most highly anticipated releases of the year for any of Miss Garland's fans, this Cd does not disappoint.

The collection contains two discs in a beautifully presented jewel case with intelligent, informative liner notes in both french and english with some rare black and white pictures. The first disc, entitled Classiques is pretty self explanatory. It contains the classic recordings done by Garland during her years at Mgm studios, with the classic songs like 'Over The Rainbow'. Also included however are some rare releases from before and after this period, including two wonderful songs done by the 7 year old Frances Gumm as she was known. Another highlight of this disc are the 4 Columbia recordings too, done in 1953. These include two jazz, brassy songs 'Heartbroken' and 'Send My Baby Back to Me' and two quieter songs 'Go Home Joe' and 'Without a Memory'. The sound quality on these 4 songs is remastered into surround sound. They sound amazing!

The second Cd is a real stunner, and the highlight of the set. This Cd is made up from 20 recordings that Garland did in her radio years and this collection spans the years of 1935 - 1951. The sound quality varies between tracks, but this is understandable considering the age and rarity of these gems. Some highlights include a lovely private recording of the Gershwin classic 'Someone to Watch Over Me' done in 1944, the only known time Judy sang this song, and also 'Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart' recorded in 1936. The backstory of this particular song is tinged with sadness, as on the night this was performed by the 14 year old Garland, her father was ill in hospital. This would be the last time he would hear his beloved daughter sing, and she sings it for him, adding a layer of increased intensity.

Overall a definate must have for any Garland fans, and worthy of all the praise it recieves.

Music Review: At Last
Rating: 5 Stars

A Judy Garland CD that actually has material, not on CD before.

There is no way, a CD is going to come out without previously released material

but this one had quite a few. Revival Time and Someone To Watch Over Me make it worth the price.
