Music Review: Beautiful music that defies description

I just commented to someone that it is hard for me to get involved in new artists' work because the music that I grew up with and have always listened to is just so incredible. Such is the dilemma that Judy Collins' "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" presents to me. This recording is so good, so vivid, and so remarkable that it remains a fixture in my life, over forty years after it was released. You know, you can only listen to one album at a time...
Collins was always developing as an artist, especially during her most fertile period: early 60s through the 90s. That's an incredible track record for a popular artist. Listen to any two simultaneous releases in her recordings and none of them sound the same. Vocally she was always studying, musically she was always reaching for more.
This classic album features the best material of the time, including songs from Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny, Ian Tyson, and Collins herself. The expert production by David Anderle and musical arrangements spearheaded by Stephen Stills helped to create a country/rock/folk setting for one of our finest vocalists. There is not a wasted note, and not a trace of filler anywhere.
Listening to this album is a thrilling experience that only gets better with repeated listenings. Thank you, Judy.

By the time this 1967 title hit the racks, Judy Collins was earning a deserved reputation for having an ear for promising songwriters. The album's predecessor, In My Life, provided early exposure to a couple of young songsmiths named Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman. With Who Knows, the folkie princess turned her luminous gaze toward up-and-coming British folk-rockers Sandy Denny (who penned the title track) and the Incredible String Band's Robin Williamson ("First Boy I Loved"). Toss in the hit version of Ian Tyson's "Someday Soon," a couple more Cohen numbers ("Story of Isaac" and "Bird on a Wire"), and Collins's own "My Father," along with a crack crew of players (including Van Dyke Parks and Stephen Stills), and you have an estimable early singer-songwriter record. --Steven Stolder
