Music reviews of Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy

Music Review: Judy Sings, Lenny Writes...What a Combo!
Rating: 5 Stars

My initial introduction to Leonard Cohen, the poet and songwriter was with "Suzanne" and "Dress Rehearsal Rag". Both were featured on the "In My Life" album by Judy Collins. I was already familiar with the composers who wrote most of the other songs on that wonderful album. There was "Hard Lovin' Loser" by the late-great Richard Farina, "Sunny Goode Street" by Donovan, "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" by Randy Newman, "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" by Bob Dylan and of course the title track, "In My Life" by Lennon/McCartney. All of these were brilliantly interpreted with the utmost artistic integrity by Judy. But the songs by the unknown, (at least to me) Canadian songwriter, Leonard Cohen captivated me like none of the aforementioned compositions. The words were subtle, plaintive, almost religious in tone. I was intrigued and enthralled by their beauty and the other worldly character of these strange naratives.

My fascination with Leonard Cohen continued with Judy's next album, "Wildflowers", where she delighted my senses even further with "Sisters Of Mercy" and "Priests". By now I had already become acquianted with Leonard Cohen, the singer on his debut album. Dare I say I was somewhat underwhelmed upon first hearing these recordings. The voice was monotone, the accompaniment rather bland and the overall feeling somewhat listless. Oh pity my poor untrained ear! For with repeated listenings, I became enraptured and found myself playing it exclusively for two months or more. In fact it wasn't until Judy's next album, "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" that I finally was able to release myself from the grasp of "The Songs of Leonard Cohen". This time around Judy seemed to be enjoying a kind sojourn into country music. Perhaps it was her relationship with Stephen Stills that found her in the recording studio with Nashville's elite pickers, Chris Ethridge on bass, James Burton on electric guitar and doboro and the inimitable pedel steel player Buddy Emmons, along with Stephen Stills on electric and acoustic guitars. The results were astonishing. Judy's crystline voice complimented by the sweet sounds of the aformentioned artists was truly brilliant. And what of the song selections? The title track "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" by the late Sandy Denny beacme one of Judy's signature songs. Her own compostion, "My Father" demonstrated her remarkable songwriting craft. Bob Dylan's "Poor Immigrant", Robin Williamson's "First Boy I Loved" and the beautiful "Someday Soon" by one of Canada's favorite sons the late Ian Tyson, all reflect her impecable taste and sensative interpretation. And the two selections by Leonard Cohen, "Story Of Isacc" and "Bird On A Wire" are almost beyond description in their purity, their passion and integrity.

Of course Judy has continued to record songs by Leonard Cohen right up until the present. This fine collection compiled by Rhino Records is essential for anyone who has loved Sweet Judy's marvelous voice and Leonard Cohen's unique poetry. What great material....."Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye", "Democracy", "Joan Of Arc", "Night Comes On", "Take This Longing" and "Famous Blue Raincoat". Anyone who has ever listened to just one or two of these songs and felt even the slighest tingle should pickup on this album. I promise, it will grow on you. It will intrigue you and eventually captivate you until you find yourself listening to these songs over and over again. There's a current resurgence into the works of Leonard Cohen. Perhaps it took the masses forty plus years to warm up to the ultra-hip, stoic Canadian. If you're looking for an introduction to his work or if you're well acquainted with him but want to own a comprehensive collection of his finest compostions, then look no further....This is the one for you. As for me it's been playing on my stereo almost nonstop for three months and still going strong!

Description of Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy

Pop interpreter Judy Collins' sublime soprano has long made her a favorite worldwide. Leonard Cohen was an acclaimed poet and novelist when Collins had a 1967 hit with his beautiful and timeless song "Suzanne." She put him on the musical map, he became of the most literate and revered songwriters of our time, and their creative synergy has become one for the ages. This new collection brings together 14 of Judy's indelible versions of Cohen's classic works, including three brand new recordings of Collins-Cohen collaborations.
Judy Collins met Leonard Cohen in 1966, at a time when the young Canadian was uncertain about his skills both as a songwriter and a singer. Collins responded powerfully to his music, assuring him that his performance and compositions were alluring and potent. She subsequently covered a number of his songs, and she even coaxed him onto the stage. This disc adds three new recordings to 11 of Collins's previous interpretations. Her crystal-clear vibrato is ideally suited to the slow melodic bearing that Cohen favors. From the country lilt of "Bird on a Wire" to the breathtaking and spare live rendition of "Song of Bernadette," Collins demonstrates why Cohen, more than any other songwriter she has covered, has been a constant presence in her repertoire for nearly 40 years. --David Greenberger
