Music reviews of Angel of Retribution (With Bonus DVD)

Music Review: Judas Priest past and present.
Rating: 4 Stars

So I find out the other day that Judas Priest with Rob Halford came out with a new album. So I decided to get this music, and I have to say I was quite impressed. I am not sure the songs have been built yet into my head like the old classics, but there is one reealllllyyy good song on the new album "Angel Of Retribution" called Judas Rising. There are also other good songs too that I like quite well, and I am sure 10 years from now, a few of these new songs will fit with me comfortably just as the old classics do. I like the cd more everytime I hear it. It kind of amazes me how people complain about this new album, the few that do anyway. Now I tried to put this into perspective, and noticed that Judas Priest rarely came out with an album in which I have liked more than 2-3 songs on them real well, so for me this new album has done justice. I am very picky sometimes on my music, and I don't just "like" a song because I think the band is oh so cool. You need to take into consideration, to come out with an album this good, and after 15 years of the original band being apart, and people in the band being in their 50's!!!! that the sounds pumped fourth on this new album sound far better than expected, other than far worse.

Most of the songs in this new Priest album have an 80's sound, so that made me happy. A couple songs may have a bit of a modern tone, yet I think this is because of the better recordings and higher quality equipment and sounds, than it is actually being a band trying to replant their roots somewhere else. Of course we will all be looking for that high pitch hit of Halfords voice, so we can see if he still has it. Perhaps I would have liked to hear it more on this album, but after all, he is in his 50's, and even so, not everyone of his songs past or present carried the almighty high pitch wail that made us believe for a second we could take over the thrones of heaven and hell at the same time. I would imagine anyone that remotely likes the old Judas Priest with Rob Halford, meaning his songs that got overkill airtime like Breaking the Law, You've Got Another Thing Coming or Living After Midnight etc. and the songs that didn't get much airtime like Green Manalishi, Metal Meltdown, or Victim Of Changes etc., would in the least find this new album appealing.

Some of this may be opinion but over the years Judas Priest (with Halford) has made quite a few albums. They are good at making at least 1-3 "great" songs each on most of their original albums. Doing this over a period of time will surely add up to filling a couple cd's with monster hit songs that you wish you could fit all on one cd, yet can't. Some of the live songs are new within themselves. I find a few songs of Halford and Priests live stuff can be better than the originals.

To sit and pick on each individual song in an album seems absurd, especially if you like even at least one of the songs on it. Take that song, love it, cherish it, and shut up. Not many bands have the powers to make a cd where every song is a masterpiece. What put's a band into greatness for me, is if over a period of time, they can be consistent on a couple good songs here and a couple there, so in the end, the result will be a nice list of the "Best Of"'s.

Let's go easy on the lyrics, we all know that the fairytale, and comic book like lyrics can go with much of our finest British bands. Many bands from this neck of the woods are mystical dreamers and fairytale readers. I hardly see how the lyrics on this new album are anymore corny than some of the lyrics on older Priest albums. Just more to complain about I guess.

Onto Ripper Owens, taking over Priest as lead vocals. Sucks. I have seen many reviews on Amazon.com and can't for the life of me see how this person is compared to Halford in any way. He surely needed to do his own thing, because he is or was not the same as Halford. I don't know if it is just little kids with a fascination for such a legendary band, that they will not allow themselves to admit that it's not the same, or if people just are hard of hearing. Either way, to me I am hearing a huge difference between the two. I am not saying Ripper can't sing, I am saying Ripper can't sing Rob Halford. Rob Halford is one of the few on this planet that has one hell of an original vocal sound, that few if any can duplicate in music consistantly.

I don't want to sit and bash individual people I may think are crazy, since we all have different tastes, and pleasures when it comes to the sound of music. However, if anyone actually thinks there is a comparison between Halford/Priest and Ripper/Priest, than we mine as well talk about how Tiny Tim sounds playing Pink Floyd. While he strums away on his little strings, it may sound cute but it sure as hell isn't the same, because he is not the original, he makes up a different sound. Just as Ripper Owens makes a different sound, and in no way could have ever competed with the originality that is Judas Priest with lead singer Rob Halford. To compare the vocal sounds and high pitched climaxes is blasphemy.

I don't want someone sounding like "Rob Halford on steroids". I don't want someone making Judas Priest sound like "Crazy thrash metal that steam rolls over the original with more aggression". I don't want a comparison of "Ripper's power vs. Halfords charisma". If this is the case, than you are looking to hear another band that seems to appeal to you more. Because there is no Judas in Judas Priest, without Rob Halford. It's like comparing two different bands. Any similarities you "think" you heard from number two is only going to be a copy, and chances are, it's not going to sound better, as it surely didn't here. Turn up the music, and listen again.

It's like Pink Floyd breaking up, or losing Roger Waters. They still had a couple good albums, but it sure wasn't the same as Pink Floyd with Roger Waters. Not all of us can be so lucky and pull off an Ozzy, and make killer songs with one band, to take on a solo career and make many more killer songs after that. Van Halen with David Lee Roth good, Sammy bad. Forgive me for getting off track, but I'd like to slay the person that can think Van Halen got any better than 1984. Rob Halford wasn't the same when he left Priest to go on his own, in my opinion I guess, or fact since it was a different band. Rob needed Priest, Priest needed Rob, it's a shame they wasted so much time apart. In the least, we now have them together again, for an album with some good sounds, and a world tour. Far better than calling it quits. If this is it, thanks at least for a last glimpse of what may have never happened.

Description of Angel of Retribution (With Bonus DVD)

Japanese limited edition pressing includes DVD (NTSC/Region 2). Please note you will need and All Code DVD player to view. Sony. 2005.
This Judas Priest release includes a DVD with the 30 minute Reunited documentary that lays the ground work for first new music from the original lineup in 15 years. From the slow crescendo of guitar and a scream at the beginning, this new outing from the reformed and re-invigorated Priest states one thing very clearly: The band is back and ready to reclaim their crown as hard rock titans. The songs, production, and performances are all on par with classics such as British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance. And the album definitely makes references Priest?s past, from the opening screech of "Judas Is Rising" to more direct lyrical name-checking (Painkiller in "Demonizer" and Sad Wings of Destiny in "Angel"). But there is a newer experimentation - a slower, darker streak - also evident on Halford?s underrated Crucible, that lets the listener know the band is not resting on its laurels. The is very evident on the 10 minute closer "Lock Ness", an epic on par with songs off Opeth?s masterful Deliverance. Make no mistake: The Metal Gods are definitely back. --Robert Arambel
