I had been searching for "Eee-O Eleven" since re-watching Ocean's Eleven, and found it here. This CD features some great songs by Sammy, a totally mis-placed Dean Martin song (I guess as a compliment/contrast to Sammy's rendition of "Ain't That A Kick In The Head", the opening track) and an excellent studio version of "Me And My Shadow" with Frank Sinatra. Their voices blended so well together, it's really amazing. There's also a studio version of "Sam's Song" with Dean Martin. Aside from the obvious Rat Pack appeal, Sammy was an amazing performer and singer and this CD proves that quite well. Also featured is the campy "Don't Be Do-Badder" from Robin And The Seven Hoods, which features the complete three-some joined by the venerable Bing Crosby. Stand out Sammy songs are "The Ballad Of Johnny Cool", "Birth Of The Blues", "Too Darn Hot", oh forget it...just buy it and dig it for yourself. You won't be disappointed. Also check out "Sammy Davis Jr. At The Coconut Grove". A live recording from the legendary (now gone) LA night club. His performance and banter on that disc are just phenomenal.

Designed in part to tap into year-2000 hipsters' Rat Pack loyalties, Sammy & Friends indeed plays like a well-informed collector's mix tape. Swinging through 20 tracks unencumbered by the likes of "The Candy Man" and "I've Gotta Be Me," the CD captures a number of kickin' solo performances as well as collaborations with Frank, Dean, Bing, and others. (By the way, how about a full reissue of the 1965 LP Davis cut with Louis Prima sidekick Sam Butera and his Witnesses?)
