Music Review: Sounds like...Journey

I have to admit that I'm perplexed by some of the negative customer reviews for this disc. Maybe those reviewers were expecting another "Departure" or "Infinity". Can't imagine why, though. Journey hasn't sounded like that for a long time. Personally, when I heard that Smith and Valory were back, I expected something more along the lines of "Escape" or "Frontiers", which was the last time Journey was actually a band ("Raised on Radio" was Perry, Schon and Cain with backing musicians). I was not disappointed. "Trial by Fire" sounds like the spiritual follow-up to "Frontiers". Songs like "Message of Love" and "Still She Cries" bear more than a passing resemblence to classics like "Separate Ways" and "Send Her My Love". Meanwhile, "If He Should Break Your Heart" and "Forever In Blue" prove that the band can still create the kind of songs that cry out to be on the radio. And, of course, there are the obligatory ballads (Would it be Journey if there weren't?). While "Trial by Fire" and "It's Just The Rain" are the best of the slower songs, it was "When You Love A Woman" that became this disc's "Faithfully" and, love the song or hate it, hearing Steve Perry's voice on the charts again during the height of the grunge era was refreshing. On the edgier side, "One More", "Castles Burning" and "Can't Tame The Lion" show that the band can still rock. Again, don't expect "Any Way You Want It" or "Wheel In The Sky". The rockers here are more in the vein of "Chain Reaction" or "Edge of the Blade". It's this balance between up-tempo, mid-tempo and ballads that makes "Trial By Fire" a great Journey album. That's not to say there aren't a few missteps. As one reviewer put it, "Colors of the Spirit" sounds like a song from a Disney movie. "Don't Be Down On Me Baby" never seems to go anywhere at all and "When I Think of You" & "Easy To Fall" could have easily been left off the album. Had they trimmed the set down to 10, this could have been a classic. All in all, there are no real surprises on "Trial By Fire". It's just Journey...and that's a good thing.
