Music Review: Journey's best album

Although the album is titled "Departure", it wasn't really that for the Journeymen. Rather, it's a continued refinement of the sound the band had started developing on "Infinity" and continued on "Evolution".
However, the big difference here is that there's a big jump in the quality of the songwriting. On those previous two albums, there were generally 4 or 5 solid songs surrounded by a lot of forgettable filler.
This one gets off to a pretty strong start with the album's two singles, the insidiously catchy pop-rocker "Any Way You Want It" and the surprisingly bluesy "Walk Like a Lady" (although guitarist/vocalist Neal Schon and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie are hardly "two of the world's best bluesmen", as lead singer Steve Perry was wont to say when performing the song live).
There's a high percentage of quality ballads on the record. The drifting "Someday Soon" has Rolie alternating lead vocals with Perry. "People and Places" is a touching tribute to the fans (even if it strongly resembles Led Zeppelin's "Thank You") with Schon(!) switching the lead vocal with Steve and some terrific counterpoint harmonies from the band. (This number went down well live on the tour).
On the second half of the album, the brief title track is a spacey guitar improv that leads into the almost as short "Good Morning Girl", lifted up by Perry's soaring vocal and actual strings. Finally, there's "Stay Awhile", which manages to be moving and romantic without being sappy and corny (like -- ugh -- "Open Arms", for example).
Besides "Any Way You Want It", the other strong upbeat tune is "Precious Time", a sort of folk rocker effectively combining Schon's electric guitar with harmonica from Rolie. (Another concert highlight). Unfortunately, the filler curse strikes again with dumb tunes like "Homemade Love", "Line of Fire" and "I'm Crying".
Of course, to enjoy Journey nowadays you have to turn your brain off when listening to Steve's lyrics (particularly the grammatically challenged "Any Way You Want It" and the simoultanous ripoff of the Stones and Dylan in "Walks Like a Lady"). If you can do that, "Departure" turns out to be the band's peak, IMHO, because it's the best example of the Journey sound centered on Perry's vocals and Schon's guitars. Starting with "Escape", wimpier keyboards and even more poppy songwriting would make the group increasingly annoying to some older fans, even as it grew more popular. "Departure" has dated far less than the band's later 80's albums, and is the one to get first, even ahead of a "Hits" collection.
