Music Review: Journey- first attempt at replacing "The Voice"

This disc was not well received when first released and received little airplay. Steve Augeri was Journey's first attempt to replace the irreplaceable Steve Perry. They now have the real deal in Arnel Pineda on vocals to bring back that classic Journey sound. Arrival reminds me of the early 90's Foreigner album with a Lou Gramm replacement singer. Not a bad disc, but it wasn't the Foreigner people knew and loved. Same goes for Journey on Arrival. But, reviewing this disc at the end of 2010, I think it is a good bargain for 5.99. I do occasionally play the tracks I burned from my brother's copy (I didn't think it was good enough to buy my own when it first came out). The biggest drawback is the number of songs. I subscribe to the idea of "all killer, no filler" and this disc has way to much filler. I listen to 8 tracks, and don't care if I ever hear any of the rest ever again. The tracks I like are Higher Place, All The Way, Signs of Life, Kiss Me Softly, Alive Again, I Got A Reason, Lifetime of Dreams, and With Your Love. I think if the disc was released with 10 songs it would have helped. Not bad, just not "true" Journey. For Augeri era fans, I recommend burning your own disc with these songs plus Remember Me from the Armageddon soundtrack and the songs Faith in the Heartland and Place in Your Heart from the Generations CD. (Warning: Generations is the worst Journey CD ever made.)

Japanese version of their 2000 studio album with one bonus track, 'To Be Alive Again'. 14 tracks in all including the singles, 'Higher Place' and 'All The Way'. The lineup includes original guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valory along with Steve Perry soundalike Steve Augeri (Tall Stories, Tyketto). No U.S. release scheduled until January 2001. Standard jewelcase.The centerpiece of the Paul-is-dead conspiracy theory was that McCartney had died in 1966 and been replaced by a sound-alike augmented with plastic surgery. Journey is hardly the Beatles, but Arrival, the zillion-selling band's first studio album in nearly five years, puts a fitting twist on the scenario by hiding its Steve Perry doppelgänger in plain sight. New lead singer Steve Augeri has not only the voice, but all its inflections--notably Perry's trademark "wo-oh-oh" Sam Cooke homage--down pat, and getting it down pat is what this collection is all about. The opening "Higher Place" thumps with a rock! melodrama so familiar it should be titled "Separate Ways, Part 2," while the power ballads that follow recall the pre-Bon Jovi days when Journey ruled as a kind of high school parking lot Air Supply. Arrival is one of those records you already know you love or hate before you hear it, but even fans might feel a lack of heat compared to the Perry-era outfit's greatest-hits disc. --Rickey Wright
