Music Review: Josh without Josh

I just saw Mr. Redman play last night in a very rare intimate club setting, and was thoroughly affirmed of my opinion that the studio takes away the edge that should truly make Josh as famous as he is. Sure, technically this record is as impressive as his last couple of efforts, yes, he takes ordinary pop tunes and converts them into stunning personal statements much in the tradition of Trane or Bird or anyone else, blah blah. This is to be expected from this record. But what I found last night was that, as I suspected, the raw, ripping talent that sits at the heart of his fearless improvisation glides and soars and comes back underneath like few tenor cats on the scene today, but this is not allowed to leak through in the over-produced world of mega-buck corporations like Warner Bros. Recording Studios. So if you want to hear traditional, technically sound, and safe versions of standard pop classics, pick up this disc immediately, but if you want to hear what makes this young man deserve all the attention he gets, stick with his Live at the Village Vanguard set, and you will be well rewarded. Of course, any chance to hear Brian Blade on the drums is well worth it, so his accompaniement raises this to a slightly above mediocre session.
