Music Review: I am "Thankful" for this truly beautiful Christmas CD
Rating: 5 Stars

I am a huge fan of Josh Groban's gift of voice and "Noel - The Christmas Album" is filled with stunning arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs which reflect both joy and poignancy through the season of goodwill. I love Josh's take on the traditional "Little Drummer Boy"; but the new "Thankful" (co-written by David Foster/Carole Bayer Sager/Richard Page) is destined to become another holiday standard (along with Michael Buble's take on yet another David Foster/Linda Thompson favourite "Grown-Up Christmas List".) I am thankful for artists like these guys to breathe so much life into beautiful music written by the experts. My only wish is for a new arrangement of the David Foster/Carole Bayer Sager penned classic "The Prayer" (teaming Josh with the equally stunning Heather Headley.) I still must say I love this album collaboration; and that it occupies a special place on my Holiday Music shelf with Maureen McGovern's "Christmas With Maureen McGovern". Prepare to be moved!!!

Music Review: Splendid Christmas Album From Josh Groban
Rating: 5 Stars

"Noel" is quite simply one of the finest Christmas albums I've heard in years, perhaps ever. Having first heard Josh Groban's lovely "Believe" in the film "The Polar Express", I have come to appreciate his broad vocal range, and depth of repertoire, ranging from classical to popular music. Here he truly does justice to many of the venerable classic songs of Christmas, from "Ave Maria" to "Silent Night" and more. Accompanying him are excellent supporting vocals from the likes of country singer Faith Hill, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and a fine gospel choir too. There's also excellent playing of orchestral arrangements from the always excellent London Symphony Orchestra. After hearing my parents' copy of this fine CD, I was thinking of stealing it, but had to resist the temptation, realizing that they had more than earned the right to play their copy constantly. Without a doubt, devout fans of Josh Groban's singing and of Christmas music will be absolutely delighted with this CD.

Music Review: A Great Collection of Songs
Rating: 5 Stars

There's not a lot of new things happening in the arena of Christmas music these days. All the great Christmas songs seems to have already been written and performed by some really great singers and songwriters. When we do get some new Christmas song it rarely holds up against the great Christmas songs of past, so you have to settle for a singer taking the classics and putting their own spin on them. Some are better than others and this collection by Josh Groban is one of those better ones. No one can deny Groban has a wonderful singing voice, but that doesn't always mean his performances are great. Thankfully, Noel is one of those great performances. The first three songs alone, classics all, are knock-out great and I dare anyone not to get emotional while listening to "I'll be home for Christmas" and "O Come All Ye Faithful," one of my favorite Christmas classics, is simply great. For anyone who loves well-sung Christmas music this CD collection is a must-have.

Music Review: Masterpiece
Rating: 5 Stars

First I want to tell you that I am not a fan of Christmas albums, some are better than others but I feel sugar everywhere around.

This album is one for all seasons and for that reason it is going to be a classic. Some complain David Foster's production, well for me it is superb. For example, Silent Night, it begins soft and then the LSO makes the big entrance and you are blown away. The arrangements of all the others songs are great and Thankful is sublime. The only but is Faith Hill, but all gets well at the end with the godspell chorus.

For me there are two albums that defied being only Christmas ones : Josh and Barbra Streisand.

I like some from The Carpenters, altough they are too saccharine but Karen's voice is from heaven. Could you imagene a duet between Karen and Josh? A Christmas wish.

The album is really one of the year's best and Josh sounds like an angel.

Music Review: great but not the greatest
Rating: 4 Stars

First I want to say that I am so happy that Josh Groban has finally put out a Christmas CD. Saying that, I have to agree with some of the reviewers in that I was somewhat disappointed. Most of the songs were perfect but in my opinion Ave Maria fell a bit flat. Too over done and not the traditional arrangement. No wow factor. It almost seemed like there were a couple of mistakes and they just left them in... I wish he would have sung this with a a simpler arrangement that would showcase his voice. Josh doesn't need anything but his voice.
I agree with the comments about the soldier's "messages". I have heard old versions of this song and it's very romantic and has a dreamy quality. This one didn't.
Lastly, although I love David Foster, his arrangments sometimes get kind of pompous and Liberace like. I would love to hear simpler arrangments and more of just Josh Groban. Sometimes the music sounded so 1980's. Otherwise I love it!
