Music Review: Sue Me, I really liked this DVD/CD, obviously most did not!

We have all of Josh Groban's CD's, DVD's and my husband and I enjoy all his work so very much. What we have seen, is a young man, who has a wonderful voice and used it beautifully, in his first DVD on Great Performances. He was very stilted and that was not bad, as he was so new to the audience and PBS, but the voice was beautiful! He did have to reach for a couple of lower notes and higher notes on it, especially on A.I., but still made it through, but in "Live At the Greek Theatre",he FINALLY has come out of the shell, of having his life run by eveyone else and is having a say, in what he chooses to perform, which is not all operatic. We happen to love the songs in foreign languages, but we also enjoy the ones in English, as well. He does not try to stay in one area, but explores a number of different genre's and we think he does it beautifully. He has been able to write and co-write some of the songs for his second CD, "Closer" and sung them in this performance at The Greek. We also love this, as he is growing as a music writer. He is producing Lucia Micarelli's first CD, which is very wise and has his own production company, which is also very wise!
All in all, I didn't hear the nasal tone everyone seems to be referring to, although, at times, there was a strain on his voice, to reach the back of The Greek. I,along with a lot of other people, actually enjoy this dressed down version of Josh, very much! Who says, Josh must always wear suits, to sound good? That makes no sense to me at all, if that is part of what a concert is based on and he feels more comfortable dressing more casually, what is wrong with that? He has been picked on for singing Linkin Park's song, "My December",which he did beautifully and hauntingly and is one of my favorites! He plays the piano beautifully in "Remember When It Rained" and also co-wrote this song. He also co-wrote the the song,"Per Te", which is done with so much feeling. Doing Paul Simon's, "America" shows his multi talent,as he also shows, when he uses the keyboards and the drums during the song, "Canto Alla Vita". He is multi-faceted, which is supposed to be good for a diamond and I think it is, for Josh, as well! If Josh is not everyone's cup of tea, I am very sorry, but he is not, nor has he ever claimed to be an "opera" singer, but just loves the use of the different languages, which he is very fluent in now, as far as the singing goes. He nails the foreign words. He absolutely wows the audience with "Mi Morena", by once more, moving into a more Spanish tone,(although done in English) but doing it so very well and making it come to life on the stage. If I were going to pick one thing which I feel was an error on the DVD/CD, which would have made me "Live At The Greek Theatre" 4 1/2 stars, but that rating is not available, it would be the fact, he chose to do an outdoor concert and also, his last concert, for the venue, for the PBS taping and I think that was a big mistake! It would have been better to have done it indoors, with better acoustics and chosen a concert, which was not the last one scheduled, before he stopped for a period of time, as he does have a voice, which needs to be carefully tended and it did put a strain on it, to be at The Greek, On the last night of his venue, having to reach the back of the ampitheater. I also would have loved to have had the song, "Hymne a L'Amour" which can make one's heart want to break, when he sings it in French, so perfectly, added to his concerts, but he doesn't do it and I cannot understand why!
All in all, I am so glad to be a member of the Josh Groban Fan Club and will continue to be one. He is still growing as an entertainer and you have not seen the last of his DVD/CD's and concerts and he will prove, he is able to fill many different types of shoes and do them all very well!
My husband and I have seen him in concert before and have tickets to see him again, this spring and are looking forward to it, so very much! I DO NOT HAVE TO DRAG MY HUSBAND TO THE CONCERTS, as he is just as much a Josh fan, as I! We are both avid GROBANITES! Neither of us is a screaming teenager, which seemed to bother so many, and I don't know why that would bother anyone! We are just adults, who recognize exceptional talent when we hear it and see it! Keep the DVD's and CD's coming, Josh! We will always be there, to purchase whatever you choose to do next!

Josh Groban's 2002 PBS "Great Performances" special was a #1 selling DVD and the best-selling long-form music video of 2003. His second "Great Performances" special was taped at L.A.'s Greek Theater in the summer of 2004. For fans of the young sophisticated pop phenomenon who has sold more than 8 million albums, this CD+DVD package is just the latest great performance in the career of Josh Groban. DVD Extras: On the road with Josh for Summer 2004 Tour and a special performance of "Believe" from The Polar Express (it's PBS footage mixed w/ film footage).If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point.
