Music reviews of Awake (Special Edition, CD/DVD)Music Review: His best yet! Rating: 5 Stars
I've had Awake since it came out on November 7 and now that I've had time to listen to it a good hundred times, I'm here to tell you that I love it not just because it's new and exciting, but because it is his BEST YET.
My initial fear with this album was that it was going to get ripped apart by the critics for having such a wide variety of songs and really no commonality other than Josh's amazing performances. Thankfully, that hasn't happened too much. I find the approach he took with this album as a refreshing change of pace and direction. Looking back, his eponymous debut sounds just as the cover looks: gray and dull. Don't get me wrong, I love the songs, but when I listen to them, there really isn't a song that gets my toe tapping (with the slight exception of "Canto Alla Vita"). Those songs seem like they are all sad ballads. Then we have Closer, which reflects the cover in that he definitely has more flavor. Songs like "Remember When it Rained" and "Never Let Go" exude a new style for Josh, one that transcends the foreign language ballads of "Per Te," "Caruso," "Hymne a l'amour," "Mi Mancherai," etc. And now we have Awake, an album that truly reflects Josh's interests and is a product straight from his hands.
With "Mai," Josh continues with his pattern of unique and slightly funky opening tracks and the orchestration is truly superb. "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" is currently my favorite song out of all three albums for three reasons: the lyrics, the falsetto, and the story behind it. Josh has said that he heard this song at a time when he needed to hear it, so there is a certain personal quality to the song. "Un Dia Llegara" is once more a foreign language ballad, but a much more mature and seasoned performance than ever before. "February Song" is a song that Josh wrote and while beautiful, the lyrics offer a whole slew of interpretations. The lyrics aside, Josh's performance is truly heartfelt. "L'Ultima Notte" is another ballad, but it is beautiful and like "Un Dia," it offers a much more mature Josh. "So She Dances" came as a surprise and the tinkling notes remind me of a music box. It really doesn't compare with anything we have seen before. "In Her Eyes" is, let's face it, a rock song, and I LOVE it! It is the easiest melody to get stuck in my head and the lyrics are beautiful. It's great to hear Josh act his age! "Solo Por Ti" wasn't my favorite when it debuted, but I have grown to love it for its simplicity. It also demonstrates this burgeoning maturity in Josh and his voice (who knew his voice could go that low?). "Now Or Never" is a song that seems to shout, "Hello, people! I'm 25 and not Pavarotti!" thanks to his collaboration with the talented, but musically different, Imogen Heap. It's a very modern approach, but fun. While Josh's voice seems to just make an appearance in "Un Giorno per Noi," it is still a fantastic song. The cello solos are beautiful and Josh provides some incredible vocal theatrics. "Lullaby" IS a lullaby. Showcasing more falsetto, this song really could put you to sleep (but in a good way!). I have to admit that "Weeping" is my least favorite song on the album. When I heard a clip months and months ago I thought it was awesome, but it has gotten the fewest listens and I can't quite explain why. Then there's "Machine," a song that I was initially terrified to hear because it just sounded so different. But I love it now. It sounds like Josh had a blast recording this song and I love the energy (not to mention that AWESOME brass part towards the end). Someone mentioned that "Verita" sounded familiar and I wholeheartedly agree, but I can't figure out what exactly. Just like the other foreign language ballads, it demonstrates his maturity, but I would have to say it's my favorite of the four. Then there's "Awake," a beautiful song Josh wrote to his family and one that can easily bring me and many other people to tears because of its sincerity and relatability.
Overall, this album is a beautiful array of songs that runs the risk of alienating some of the diehard foreign-language fans, but that's really just their loss. It really exposes the audience to new types of music, not to mention an insight into Josh's creative process. "Machine" is his response to getting thrown into the system of the music business today where a singer is given a bunch of similar-sounding songs that the studio wants. He didn't want that overbearing interference and that's why he took this album into his own hands and crafted a product that exhibits HIM and not the studio. Kudos for standing up for yourself, Josh.
And a quick word on the DVD...if you have never before seen Josh in concert or on any of the other dvds, get this. When it is just him and a camera he just can't seem to stop himself from cracking a joke or doing something silly that makes you laugh. I'll tell you that I will never be able to hear the words "It's your Mom!" again without smiling and hysterically laughing! And that's why we love him!

Description of Awake (Special Edition, CD/DVD)The Josh Groban phenomenon continues with Awake, his third studio album. Both of the extraordinary singer's first two studio discs have been certified five times platinum, with his most recent, 2003's Closer, charting #1 pop. His uplifting music rises ever higher on Awake. The Special Edition features two bonus audio tracks on the CD, and a DVD featuring "The Making of Awake" video piece. More Josh Groban Josh Groban | Closer | In Concert | Josh Groban is making it hard for anybody who can't say "classical crossover" without smirking to maintain an acceptable level of snobbery. Awake, his third studio disc and arguably his most personal--he co-wrote four tracks and favors his native English over Italian--boasts as many bold names as any tricked-out hip-hop disc: Dave Matthews, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Imogen Heap, and Herbie Hancock contribute in various capacities, and a slew of behind-the-scenes collaborators best known for their work in mainstream pop circles deepen the dimensions of a style widely considered claustrophobic. For all the studio doors that got opened to create Awake, though, Groban's signature sound never once slipped out to take the air; "the voice"--that hypnotic, spun-silk wonder of an instrument--is as concentrated as ever, and Awake, in addition to showing off its many splendors, serves as a vehicle for parading its versatility around. While "Un Giorno Per Noi," the deeply romantic theme to the 1968 film Romeo E Giulietta, delivers the Groban that fueled the sale of 16 million previous discs to soft-hearted fans, "Machine," with Hancock, gives up a new form of funk: dignified, classy, and surprisingly unstiff. --Tammy La Gorce
