Music Review: The debuting album of a nonconformist pianist

This is an unedited live performance of Lang Lang, or Bang Bang, as he has come to be called over the years, back in 2000.
Unlike Yundi Li's 'Vienna Recital' issued by the yellow label, where obviously all the applauses have been ticked off, this Telarc recording preserves the original concert hall effect, but at a compressed level.
The reason of such compression is not difficult to find - the prototype of Mr. Lang "Bang"'s performance style is his enlarged range of dynamics. The original recording sonics for pianoforte performances rarely can do justice to this style, as proved by so many later recordings of Mr. Lang 'Bang', where the body of the sound becomes effectively compressed and even distorted beyond recognition, as those who have been entranced by Mr. Lang "bang"'s live performances would tell. The advice is to use a headphone, though this in no way solves the entire problem.
Another nonconformist feature of Lang is his orignal interpretation, that have proved so problematic for diehard conventional listeners straddling between knowledgeable and ignorance, but which rarely poses problems for the truly knowledgeable and open-minded or the outright ignorant.
For an 18 year old pianist to put forward a diverse repertoire as this one requires not merely hardwork or talent - but also guts. I need not mention that there were more shouts than onces of 'bravo' in this live performance recording. Sonics aside, the original musicality of Lang certainly is no mere commercial hype. Even so, not all the pieces in this debut recording performance manage to sustain the emotional tension under Lang's own original interpretations. Contrary to some seasoned critics' views, the opening Haydn sonata is a rather successful piece, rendered less so by a slackened 2nd movement. The Brhams pieces varies quite a bit in terms of musical tension. Overall, the Russian pieces (especially Tchaikovsky) tend to surface over the rest, and the closing piece is really a show of pyrotechniques more than anything.
To what extent this pianist can improve, or even maintain such standard, is rendered more doubtful by his current performance rate of well nigh 200 concerts per annum.
