This recording has a lot going for it. It has First Class and demontration qualily sound, it has Claus Peter Flor and the Maylaysian Philharmonic playing the very devil out of this music. Most importantly it has Josef Suk's most inspired music.
The Asrael Symphony was composed by Suk after the death of his teacher/father in law
Antonin Dvorak, and the death of Dvorak's daughter, Suk's young beloved bride Otyka.
The Symphony is a roller coster ride of emotions and feelings. One minure you hear
joy and happiness, the next terror and horror, loss and grief. Finally acceptance
and the feeling of the need to go on living, and the knowledge that you can do so.
Claus Peter Flor and the Maylaysians wend their way through this work confidently and with all the technique and passion that Suk requires from the musicians. This recording is simply white hot and stunning. As I said before the sonics are as usual with BIS demonstraion quality and I predict this SACD disc will be on more
than a few short lists of critics first choices for disc of the year. As for the work itself it deserves to become much better known. It should not be neglected
as a curiousity, but become a regular favorite on many orchestras programs.
