Music Review: Least Annoying - Dare I Say, Enjoyable?!? - Children's CD ever Produced in the History of Children's CDs

Although I speak Spanish and am raising my child bilingually, I would recommend all of José-Luis Orozco's children's CDs ("Diez Deditos" and "Letras, Números y Colores") to any parent, regardless of his or her interest in bilingual exposure. I occasionally play the CDs when my child isn't even in the car with me. It's that good.

Of the three CDs aforementioned, "De Colores" contains the most traditional music, especially from Mexico. "Letras" is more focused on learning concepts of - you guessed it! - letters, numbers, and colors. For the parent who is interested in raising a child bilingually, I have found that songs - for both children *and* adults - are one of the best ways to learn a language, with respect to both accent and retainment to long-term memory. For children, it also makes learning a pleasurable activity, especially for "active" children.

Interestingly, there have been numerous studies conducted that show playing movies or television programs do little to aid a child's ability to speak a foreign language (although hearing a foreign language at an early age is said to possibly negate an accent later on in life). If you are trying to combat passive bilingualism (a child that understands a foreign language but replies in the dominant language - likely English, if you're reading this), a CD of songs that a child will want to sing along with is a great tool.

The book "Diez Deditos" that accompanies the similarly-named CD is also great, especially for parents who did not grow up singing the songs on the CDs. It provides the Spanish lyrics and music along with the English translation, plus the movements that accompany the song (e.g. what one would typically do with his hands while singing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider").

Obviously, I can't rate this highly enough - and no, Señor Orozco is not paying me to write this. :)
