Music Review: A Choice Musical Experience

Back in the `60s, Jorma Kaukonen was my favorite rock guitarist, and he played in the same group as my favorite rock bassist, Jack Casady. In the `70s, Jorma and Jack formed Hot Tuna to play blues licks. I thought it was a bit strange for the guitarist who nearly wore out his wah-wah pedal on Crown of Creation to focus almost entirely on acoustic guitar, but I thought it was a nice little diversion that would not last for long. I guess I blew that call.
Here we are in the 21st century, and Jorma is still playing acoustic blues. Although Jack Casady is nowhere to be found on Blue Country Heart, and it's not called a Hot Tuna album, Jorma has put together a might fine band: Sam Bush on mandolin, fiddle, and background vocals; Jerry Douglas on dobro and Weissenborn; Byron House on bass and background vocals; and Béla Fleck on banjo on a couple of cuts.
Jorma explains that for years he has had the dream of going to Nashville to record some old country blues cuts with some of America's finest bluegrass musicians, and now the dream has become a reality. From the opening notes of the first cut, "Blue Railroad Train," you immediately realize that this is going to be a recording that sounds great and features some great old tunes. To hear these guys play tunes such as "Just Because," Blues Stay Away from Me," and "Waiting for a Train" is really a choice musical experience. The voice sounds the same as that featured on "Good Shepherd" from the old Airplane days, but the instrumentation is much different. Can it really be more than 40 years since those days? And these songs go back much farther than that. Tasty, tasty, stuff--Blue Country Heart is a recording that I recommend to Airplane fans, Tuna fans, country fans, blues fans, audiophiles, and anybody else who appreciates good music, well done.

The Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna guitar great breathes new life into vintage country blues and bluegrass tunes with the help of such stellar sidemen as Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas.Singer and guitarist extraordinaire Jorma Kaukonen was a devoted aficionado of early-20th-century rural music long before he cofounded Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and Hot Tuna some years later. On his new solo album, Kaukonen has found an imaginative setting to remind listeners how a fusion of styles and influences from both black and white musicians defined American country music in its formative decades. Included here are gems, both familiar and obscure, by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, Jimmie Davis, Cliff Carlisle, and other country musicians who were clearly inspired by their blues cousins.
