Positive or negative review: A little bit of both but mostly positive
I don't watch Disney Channel as much as I used to, but I've been watching it enough to know that they have high hopes for this girl. Within just a couple of months, her singles "Outside Looking in", "We Are Family" (a cover of the Sister Sledge hit ), and "Jump to the Rhythm" were airing during the commercial breaks. It grabbed people's attention and got them saying "Who is this girl", "She's pretty good", and "Where can I get these songs". Then POOF, out of nowhere comes this album to save us all from buying a bunch of Disney soundtracks. I must say that this is an EXCELLENT marketing strategy to draw attention to Disney Channel's newest big moneymaker (though I doubt that miss Pruitt will be seeing a good sum of that money. Disney is good for getting recognized but otherwise extremely cheap), no wonder the album went gold (or so I've heard).
Now, let me just say this before anyone jumps to any conclusions. This girl CAN sing. And after listening to this CD, her vocal styling instantly reminded me of one particular artist. Natasha Bedingfield. Yes I know it sounds ridiculous but just listen. The way she vocally adlibs with her "ohs" and "whoahs" , and becomes lyrically creative with her songwriting is obviously reminiscent of a young Natasha. Upon a second listen there were also a few hints of Stacie Orrico, and in couple of the ballads (such as "Outside Looking in" and "Waiting for You") she had a few "Aly and AJ" moments.
There is no doubt that she's good. However, sometimes the way she articulates when she's singing, you have trouble understanding exactly what she's saying ("No Ordinary Girl", "Who Likes Who")
Lyrically...well, it depends on how you look at it and of course personal taste. Most of the songs were co-written by Jordan herself and all based on her life experiences which I don't find hard to believe after hearing tracks such as "Teenager" and "Who Likes Who". While these songs are cute and catchy, someone my age just can't help but cringe just a bit. And then there's also "My Reality" which is a great song that preaches good morals but it all comes across as a bit too... well, PREACHY. Not to mention corny and pure and sweet enough to give you a sugar rush (this is what I like to call Corn Syrup). But hey that's just me.
But are also a few tracks on here that are quite impressive and show that she has a certain degree of talent that is beyond her years (but not by very far). This is shown in songs such as "Outside Looking in", "Waiting For You", "Later", and "When I Pretend". ("Miss Popularity" and "over It" fall somewhere in between.)
The ballads are definitely the shining moments on this album. They are fairly moving and clearly have a certain amount of emotion put into them. And then there's "Jump to The Rhythm" which is clearly a brilliant song (and not written by Jordan Pruitt) and could easily be a minor hit. Plus the bonus track "Whatever" (only available on Amazon.com as far as I know) which is also good and in my opinion worthy of being much more than just a bonus track.
As for "We are Family", well for one thing it's been redone so many times that it comes across as a bit bland but her version is fairly original. But of course it depends on personal taste. Half of her listeners will say that she butchered it while the other half will praise her for making it her own.
Overall it's good. The material is very relative though somewhat childish. It has it's moments, but for what it is (which is an enjoyable CD directed mainly at kids ages 9-14) it's really great. Just a little too sugary sweet and easily outgrown for my taste. She definitely gets points for originality and writing what she knows as opposed to being a poser. I definitely look forward to seeing how she matures as an artist. She clearly has a lot of potential and this is a good start for her. Hopefully in the near future she'll break away from Disney and start doing her own thing.

Description of No Ordinary Girl (W/Dvd)All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. Fifteen-year-old Jordan Pruitt has the power to reverse charges of fogyism in households across America: The songs on No Ordinary Girl skew heavily teen-ward (check song titles like "Miss Popularity" and "Who Likes Who"), but whether you wear bifocals or a retainer, she'll reel you in--before you know it you, too, could be singing about how you want a cellphone and the keys to the Mercedes (see "Teenager"). Pruitt made a name for herself prior to No Ordinary Girl with two singles; "Outside Looking In" and "Jump to the Rhythm," both included here, burned up the original soundtracks to two Disney Channel movies. What separates her from the mouse-ears-wearing pack, though, is genuine promise. Pruitt's is a stylish voice--creamy and sweet and a little quirky. It serves her exceptionally well on these featherweight songs, not one of which won't be relatable to anyone who has ever sought refuge from the horrors of high school in a pop song. More important, it's suited for weightier material--MySpace subscribers may claim Pruitt as their talented mascot for now, but don't be surprised if she's belting anthems for minivan drivers a few albums down the line. --Tammy La Gorce
