Canadian Music Store Music Reviews of Joplin: TreemonishaMusic Review: Interesting
Resurrected long after his death, Treemonisha was Joplin's most ambitious composition. We'll never know exactly what Joplin intended as the orchestration and arrangements are not solely Joplin's but actually done by Gunther Schuller. This is a musically strong version and performance which probably does justice to Joplin's intent. The music is very good. I can't comment on how this work would fare in performance but it is certainly enjoyable listening. I agree with a prior reviewer that the best pieces are those where Joplin uses popular idioms. I don't believe, however, that any of the music in Treemonisha is as good as Joplin's best piano rags. |
