Music Review: Joni On The Borderline

Over the years Joni Mitchell had been in a constant state of musical and lyrical exploration,often baffling longtime listeners with some unconventional creative decisions. This is Joni's second album release of the 1990's and as she began her third complete decade as a recording artist there were again changes on the horizon for her. This also marked the 20'th anniversary of her commercial breakthrough with Court and Spark and while no one is going to mistaken this for that particular album by any means her creative journey still continued unabated as she and her producer Larry Klein re-fashioned her sound that closely resembled the darkly introspective,jazzy hued side of her musical personality that once emmerged during her Hejira period. This was a good thing for listeners of that era as her use of heavy synthesizers and glossy production values in the 80's had completely disappeared by this point. The opener "Sunny Sunday" musically sets the basic tone for the album. It's a chilly,fretless bass heavy sound (it's apparent the sound of Jaco Pastorious impacted heavily on Joni's sound) with some occasional disonant jazz sax floating in and out of the arrangement. It can be easily said that from song to song there is a similarity in structure and that lack of variety is the reason I deduct a star. With as much Joni Mitchell as I've listened to the one quality I always admired most about her is the ability to take a specific sound and let it run wild in a number of variations. This album is more about an overall sound. Lyrically the album shows Joni's reflections on domestic violence in "Not To Blame" and perhaps herself on "Yvette In English". Considering how brooding the overall feeling of the album is there's no surprise that there are often lyrical references to the moody feeling of the mid 90's as well. At this point Joni was not alone in her irritation with the music industry. It didn't seem so much that she was trying to bite the hand that fed her;she just wanted to keep presented her art to the public without being forced,as a well established artist to make ridiculous compromises. As middle age set in Joni didn't have to worry about any newfound weariness of spirit as she'd been there for a long time. And that is what she presents here. No fuss,no angst-just a weary spirit searching for solace in her creative fatique.
