Music Reviews of ShineMusic Review: I love the music of Joni Mitchell Rating: 5 Stars
Joni Mitchell is such a talented song writer and musical arranger. This disc is proof of that. "One Night Last Summer" is a goregous instrumental track. I love the saxophone playing by Bob Sheppard on this track and throughout this disc. The piano playing is beautiful on this track too. Joni includes a new version of her classic tune "Big Yellow Taxi". I also liked the track "This Place". These are two songs about protecting the enviroment. "Hana" is another highlight on this disc. This groovy song is a tribute to hard working people. This song is also a reminder not to give up when times are tough. "If" is a song that reminds us to be patient with ourselves and other people. Joni expresses her anti war feelings on the tracks "If I Had A Heart" and "Strong And Wrong" These songs are very touching and thought provoking. I really enjoyed listening to this album.

I am in awe. I am grateful. I am listening only my second time through now. But it is a marvelous album, absolutely soulful, warm, deep. I feel spoken to and with. Of course I have long admired Joni Mitchell's brilliant music. But right now to be here with her comments on our world-particularly the song Shine-feels very good. She makes connection. Music (or all arts) at its best is that connection. I sobbed during Shine. The collective mourning, and yet the joyful parts in all of it. To feel touched, to feel surprised, to feel 'yes, that's just how I feel too', and it doesn't make the state of the world any less heartbreaking, but it's helpful, and affirming. The album is soothing but not lulling, and I don't believe now is a good time to be dulled and lulled by music or any other thing. I would recommend this to anyone. I only wish it was longer.
Music Review: The personal is political Rating: 3 Stars
...and Ms. Mithcell's best lyrics have always been her personal. This CD got rave reviews in our local paper, but for me, it was disappointing. The music is lovely, rich and lush, but it reminded me of "For the Roses"--not a bad thing, but not a new thing, either.
I've always thought that she just doesn't do "cause" lyrics well, and nothing on this album changed my mind. Where her personal lyrics are evocative and yield additional insights with repeated listenings, her "cause" lyrics--and certainly in these songs--are just kind of ham-handed and unsubtle.
The album I hope she has in her--and that she'll make--is the story of how a woman in her 60s who, after years of love affairs, comes to terms with getting older, with being old. I'd love one more Joni album that speaks to me.
And I loved her voice on this.
Music Review: Maudlin and cynical Rating: 3 Stars
I love Joni Mitchell's history of work. This cd has tones and chords reminiscent of her geffen lp's and not always the best ones. The saxophone
that runs throughout this set sounds like a kenney G. album. The sparse synthesized environment and Joni's droll synopsis of modern times lick and bleed. Joni used to have a voice that had more color. This voice is gasping more than singing. This cd does anything but shine.Even her cover of Big Yellow Taxi is questionable. It is a so what cover of her ecology hit from a more interesting time of her artistry.
I'm sorry if this review upsets fans, but this cd is no reason to get excited.
She is still Joni Mitchell and I admire her work to an extent-
On the 2nd listen I was able to empathize with her point of view about this vapid greedy cuture, but the cd is like a tombstone to it.
Music Review: Disappointing sound on an otherwise good album.... Rating: 2 Stars
I am a big fan of Joni, but only her post-60's music. Court and Spark was the album that hooked me. Shine is a strange album. I've listened to it several times, almost memorized the lyrics to the title song, but yet something was missing. I then listened to this CD (on Ultimate Ear triple.fi Pro 10 earphones), and realized that there was little or no soundstage, the music seemed jammed towards the center channel rather than spread across the listening space. Many of the intsruments were close-miked, and had no 'air' around them. The cymbals on Shine and other songs seemed to be manipulated, so that their decay was un-natural, and sustained for effect. Bass was bloated and not comparable to her other albums. I could tolerate Shine on good speakers, but it just doesn't work for me on headphones. Still, I'm glad to have this in my collection.
