Music Review: " I told 'em I was John Q from Outer Space..."

Finally I get to hear the WHOLE THING! Growing up as a kid in the early 60's, my best friend's family had an album version of this comedy disc... but it had a half-inch deep V-shaped chip out of the edge. So we'd start the needle r-i-g-h-t on the leading edge of the first complete groove. We didn't want to miss any of it as the rest of the material on there was nothing short of great.
If you want to know how Robin Williams got the be the way he is today and why he cites Winters as his major influence and mentor, check this one out.
While only one cut here is spontaneous and improvisational (audience suggestion of the skit he acts out), the rest of it will give you major insights into just why Jonathan Winters is considered to be exceptional amongst all stand-up comedians...ever.
ALL the characters' voices, sound effects too numerous to list, singing, college cheer/school song impersonations... on and on - he is one man creating an entire world for you to inhabit with him. With never a curse word nor off color reference necessary to create his humor, Mr. Winters projects a certain childlike innocence in his observations of the environment around him. Similar to other great observational humorists - Cosby, Carlin, Seinfeld - he sees ordinary and exceptional things through a slightly off-kilter prism from the rest of us. God love him for that!
Originally released in 1960, it has a little bit of situational humor of the time, i.e. there's a whole interview with Elwood P. Suggins from Belbrook, Ohio, on flying saucers that have landed in his wheat fields. All of the cuts though feature people and situations you will encounter in your everyday life... preachers, generals, announcers, kids... (but probably not the spaceman) and Jonathan's little phrases, sounds, and people he inhabits will come flowing back. For being so much a creature of its time, those insightful observations make me find this album to be extremely relevant to today.
I've looked for this one over the years off and on and had never found it. Believe me, the day I did was a 'wonderful' day in my world indeed.
