Music Review: I LOVE This Album

This album is one of my favorites. I got it on vinyl in the mid-'70s shortly after its initial release (without the bonus tracks) and, aside from the rather pretentious "Amazing Grace" at the end, I love it through and through.
If I were to have only one Jonathan Richman album, this would be it. It has all my favorites of his (except "Dodge Vegomatic") on it. The band's style, which reminds me of the amateur rock & roll bands we had play at our high school dances in the '60s, features addictively infectious beats, catchy tunes, and outrageously bizarre and hilarious lyrics. Some of his later stuff might be more sophisticated and even exotically folksy, but I'd rather laugh and sing along while I bop around in my seat.
I can't say it's an acquired taste because I've known people who don't like this record even after 30 years of exposure to it, but I loved it out of the box and still do. I went nuts when I saw Jonathan Richman in "There's Something about Mary" because he's still relatively unknown outside of Boston.
It is easy to discern the influence this album had on the music of the Violent Femmes.
