Music Review: Songwriter Jonathan Nelson confidently steps up

Songwriter Jonathan Nelson confidently steps up to the plate with Right Now Praise; the result definitely a product for the church arena as opposed to one with evangelising the lost in mind. Keeping lyrics to a minimum, this is direct praise and worship US gospel style, more conducive to joining in than merely listening. Not only is this what worship is about anyway, it whets the appetite for seeing such bands live as it promises a great time of praise.
Though no new trails are blazed here in a musical sense, the standard of writing and delivery is very high throughout with no troughs at all. Jonathan Nelson kicks off sweetly with choice cuts of the pushy `Champions' and the familiar-sounding (and slightly lengthy) `My Name is Victory'. There's the worship triptych of the interesting named `Capacity', `Only You' and `How Great Is Our God' that keeps things simple, ushering the listening towards God's throne. The bonus track `Healed' pulls no punches and is probably the most adventurous for the musicians.
So Jonathan swung his bat and connected with whatever the pitcher hurled his way. And a couple of tracks are sure home runs. Being more of an addition than a breakthrough, I am not certain if he has carved out a definitive niche for himself but Right Now Praise does sit well among what the big names have on offer, making Jonathan Nelson a worship leader to be noted. Rating: 4/5
