Music Review: Quite Interesting

The truth is that I bought this cd out of my love for vampire movies and scores. I just had to get this cd and include it in my personal collection!. Obviously, I had no expectations at all concerning the quality of the music. Jonathan Davis and Richard Gibbs are not Elliot Goldenthal (even though Goldenthal's score for Interview with a Vampire is not an excellent score, neither), but I had interest in listening to this music. First of all, because I had not listened to anything by these musicians before, and secondly because I had read that this album featured the Indian Classical Music master and violin performer Shankar (not to be confounded with Ravi Shankar, the sitar maestro). Logicly, the album is not anything outstanding. Apart from the fact that it lasts just 30 minutes (it seems to be the rule, now. How many scores last half an hour?. A lot), there is little thematic development here, the music is a collection of tracks with orchestral, choral, electronic and ethnic sounds that give this music and exotic and mysterious flavor. It is precisely this ethnic touch, achieved by means of Indian instruments, percussion and voices, that constitutes the great achievement of this score, and that makes Queen of the Damned an interesting piece of music to be heard with an open mind. It is not a very good score, but it is entertaining enough, and it offers something new (as opposed to, for instance, John Williams' last works), which is something I do appreciate. My favourite tracks are Queen of the Damned, Air Lestat and the Queen is Dead.To sum up, whether you are a fan of vampire movies, or of Anne Rice's mythology, or a soundtrack collector, or you are just interested in film music in general, and look for something new, try this one. But forget Goldenthal's score for Interview with the Vampire, 'cos this one has nothing to do with it, neither in terms of style nor melodic treatment. As I say, it is not an excellent score, but it is worth your money if you have an open mind and want to experience new things.
