Music Review: A long time coming....

Many years ago I was listening to a live radio broadcast of Jonathan Butler singing "True love never fails." As the song progressed, he began to sing extemporaneously turning the song into a sung sermon, leaving me in no doubt that he was a true believer.
Now many years and many albums later, Jonathan has released "the worship project" and surprise surprise...it's on the MARANATHA label who have led the revolution in contemporary worship music for the past 30 years.
As with anything Mr Butler does, the playing and the singing is exemplary. Eight of the twelve tracks are written by him and although not classics (yet) they fit very well into the stylistic niche he has carved for himself as a blend of Earl Klugh/ George Benson/ Al Jarreau with that wonderful South African rhythmic sensibility.
I'm listening to it for the first time through and the four covers that he does, Ruiz's "You're worthy of my praise", Founds' "Lord,I lift Your name on high", Tommy Walker's "That's why we praise Him" and Lenny Leblanc's "No higher Calling" are all worthy versions - respectful, yet fresh in interpretation.
From the simple praise of "He is the Lord" and "Falling in love with Jesus" to the tender worship of "Lord, I'm ready" and "You are so beautiful" with the contemporary flavored "It's already there", this is an album to savor and enjoy. It's also a worship experience tailor-made for a personal retreat. Thank-you! Jonathan...it was a long time coming but well-worth the wait!
