It's simple. If you like Johnny Winter, you'll like Live Johnny Winter And (1971). If blazing blues-rock guitars aren't really your thing, then you probably won't like this. It's loud, bluesy, unruly and full of raw energy. It ain't pretty...
...It's Johnny Winter!
The music here was recorded during the fall of 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City and at Pirate's World in Dania, Florida. The band includes Johnny Winter on vocals, guitar and harmonica; Rick Derringer on guitar and backing vocals; Randy Jo Hobbs on bass and backing vocals; Bobby Caldwell on drums. The album was a big hit with fans (but only a few critics) and went gold in 1971. It's still Johnny Winter's best-selling album ever.
A blues-rocking, but somewhat aimless, Good Morning Little School Girl opens the album and is followed by the entertaining twelve-minute slow-blues burning of B.B. King's It's My Own Fault.
Johnny has never been shy about doing Rolling Stones covers, and this heavy version of Jumpin' Jack Flash ROCKS!
The Rock N' Roll Medley is rowdy, rockin' and a little sloppy (but plenty energetic). It features three lightning-quick songs that were made famous in the 1950s by Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

The album's centerpiece is the unbelievable Mean Town Blues. Nine minutes of blistering blues-rock electric and slide guitar. Winter madness. Scorching hot!
A fantastic and rockin' version of Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode wraps things up, and Winter makes the song his own with a rousing electric guitar workout and an enthusiastic vocal performance.
Many of the rock music concerts in the late 1960s and especially the early 1970s were very loud and very physical events. Tribal. Shamanistic. A lot of pot smoke. Wine pouches. Pints of whiskey. Dancing, shaking, moving. People falling down loaded. Couples making-out. Wild stuff! Live Johnny Winter And captures that atmosphere and those memories well, but it's the hot guitar playing from Johnny especially (this is definitely his gig) and Rick Derringer that make this a must-have for Johnny Winter and blues-rock fans. Maybe it's just me, but didn't it seem like everybody had this album in the early 1970s?
